euromic is enhancing its glowing worldwide reputation and ongoing growth by rebranding with an eye-catching, contemporary and vivid new corporate identity that adds impressive extra dimensions to the brand.
This vibrant new style features a striking new logo that reflects this powerful brand’s forward-looking reputation and position in the market as a modern, strong, dependable partner across the globe.
"We’re really excited and passionate about the dramatically different new branding. It evocatively captures the essence of euromic and our evolving business, today and in the future.” said Hasan Dinç, President of euromic
“In 2014, we began to look closely at our brand and our position in the market. In particular we considered how our membership has been growing significantly worldwide and what we offer has developed; and we asked ourselves whether the existing identity truly represented the business and our characteristics, today and for the future.
“We now generate global sales of over 500 million euros. We are a major force throughout the world with 43 carefully selected invited members in our network together employing over 1,200 group travel professionals in 43 destinations. Each member is an experienced local market leader providing first class services and operating to the high standards and principles associated with the euromic brand worldwide since 1973. We need an image that captured this global reach, our strength, our standards, our contemporary outlook, our energy and our enthusiasm.
“We concluded that to achieve this, it was time for a radical major change, a very different new visual identity.
“The result is our new logo, together with our brand statement - the power of local knowledge – which now clearly reflect the vast strengths and great assets of the organization and our highly important role in the DMC sector worldwide, now and in years to come, ".
“The seven coloured ‘swooshes’ in the new logo together form an ‘e’ that represents the earth, the globe, with each colour representing a continent and one of the seven core values of the euromic brand – unity, fun, innovation, experience, trust, diversity and energy.”
The new logo visually amplifies euromic’s position as a global brand that delivers locally, a worldwide family operating to consistently high standards with a consistent global message.
Hasan Dinç concludes; “This identity change is an important development for euromic since it expresses our vision, vigour and values of being a global player with local roots. We have come far since we founded 43 years ago and we are now deeply focussed on the next generation of how business is done.
“It is a very significant step forward for us and will be a major asset as we continue to expand across the world and reinforce our long-standing position as THE Leading Destination Management partnership.”

euromic and its members believe that the key to success lies in giving to the community.
We are blessed to work with many amazing organizations and professionals, and we strive to give back in meaningful ways. One such organization that our members support is Sagapo Children’s Foundation, and we are committed to helping this organization.
Project for 2016: Restoring a school in Sri Lanka
At the junior school in Gampola Wela, a village situated around 30 km away from Kandy in the highlands of Sri Lanka, the children must sit on a dirt floor with old and often broken chairs and desks and they have nowhere to store their books and pencils. Their school is a shed without windows and without separate classrooms. All the children study in the same space, just divided into small groups. Two teachers must instruct 40 children from 11 different age groups, all in the same space simultaneously. The roof of the shed is in very bad condition and it gets worse during the monsoon season. It will cost just €7,000 to restore the roof, clean and paint the walls, place partitions between classes, and buy new desks and chairs for the children.
Sagapo Children’s Foundation helps create world change through education.
Education is a fundamental right that is necessary for the development of each person and for a better society.

euromic bids farewell to its first president, Harry Baum
It is with fond memories and great sadness that we learned of the recent passing of Harry Baum, an industry pioneer and legendary figure. Known for his wit, intellect and wisdom, Harry was a treasured member of the euromic family and will be greatly missed by all.
"Harry taught our industry around the globe a great deal", says Mr. Karim El Minabawy, President of euromic . "He was truly a teacher and mentor to many of us as well as to many people around the world."
Harry served as the first president of euromic from 1974 to 1976 after the association's founding in 1973. It was during his presidency that much of euromic's unchanging philosophy was introduced. These ideals guide our work today, and we continue to focus on local expertise, creativity, ethics, top quality programs and the best service to our valued clients.
His legacy was further detailed in the British press, including this article at MeetPie: HERE
euromic supports Sagapo Children's Foundation at IMEX America
For every appointment made with one of euromic's 37 member DMCs at the upcoming IMEX America in Las Vegas, a donation will be made to Sagapo Children's Foundation. This is in addition to euromic's ongoing financial commitment to charitable organizations.
Sagapo is dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential through education. Their mission is to create a better learning environment for children and increase awareness among their parents, communities, and governments about the necessity and importance of proper education. The organization was founded by Christina Drakos, who is also the President of Drakos DMC, the euromic member in Cyprus, and is one of our charities of choice.
One of the Ten Golden Rules of euromic is that all euromic members perform as "orchestral leaders harmonizing all requested services".
The Global Summit of The Consumer Goods Forum, which took place in the Halic Congress Centre Istanbul between 20-22nd June in 2012, brought together top CEOs and senior management of over 700 of the world's top retailers, manufacturers, service providers and other stakeholders across 70 countries. Forum member companies have combined sales of EUR 2.1 trillion and their retailer and manufacturer members employ over 9.1 million people.
« Over the three days, we succeeded with all press conferences, transportations, store visits, technical arrangements and over 25 lunch and dinner events both at the Halic Congress Center and venues all around the Istanbul such as Cıragan Palace Kempinski, Esma Sultan Palace, Sabanci Museum and Maiden’s Tower. In this event(s), every single one of our project manager performed as a Orchestral Leader and a conductor.
A conductor doesn't play every instrument, but he knows every note in the piece. He knows the phrasing of each movement. Each Project Manager at ODS knew the ebb and flow of the every single planning & dinner event within the three days whether they managedit or not... A good conductor also understands at a profound level how the instruments interact. All PMs worked very closely during the three days and supported each other when there was a need for contribution.
Our project managers “conducted" each event fluently and did not run themselves to perform all the parts because they knew that they were the foundation for each event - keeping everyone working together through their leadership! »

Hasan Dinç – ODS Turkey – euromic Turkey
One of the Ten Golden Rules of euromic is that all euromic members are highly recognized in their own country and enjoy good relationships with peers and suppliers.
« A few years ago one of our clients held an international congress in Riga, Latvia. About 50% of participants were non-European Union citizens and they needed to have visa for entry to our country. That was one of the first years since Latvia joined Schengen and we followed all the requested information and requirements very carefully.
Everything was going well until we got a call from our client's office - one of the key speakers from India, who obviously need visa to enter the country, was cruising on the river Volga in Russia and returned exactly two days before the next flight to Riga to the congress. The only possibility for him to reach a Latvian Embassy was in Moscow on Friday after 11:00a.m., when he came back from the cruise. Taking into consideration all the regulations and terms, it seemed impossible.
That was a challenge for us! We didn't give up and using our good relations and contacts reached the Latvian Embassy in Moscow, explained the situation and it was agreed that the speaker could come on Friday with passport and all the documents. On that Friday at 16:00pm, the Schengen visa was in his passport.
Most all DMCs have encountered last minute impediments that hindered the operation of their group, and resourceful DMCs manage to overcome such calamities. »
Vlad Koriagin - Baltic Travel Group Ltd. – euromic Baltic States
One of the Ten Golden Rules of euromic is that all euromic members have the capacity and flexibility to respond promptly and effectively to unforeseeable situations.
« Most all DMCs have encountered last minute impediments that hindered the operation of their group, and resourceful DMCs manage to overcome such calamities.
To this end, here is one such of our experiences:
One of our major clients on a one week cruise charter - all shore excursions functioned like clockwork, Swiss clockwork . . . till the day of disembarkation . . . . The cruise vessel was scheduled to arrive Piraeus on Saturday at 07:00AM for disembarkation and the 450 guests were to be transferred to the airport for their departures on various flights.
On Saturday 01:00AM the Union of Tourist Bus drivers declared a 48-hour strike effective immediately in a sign to support the taxi drivers’ Union strike that had been on for the past 3 days.
Our bus contractor called me in the middle of the night to announce this news . . .
The bus contractor, our operations manager and I went to the Public Bus depot at 4:00AM and managed to rent 15 public buses to transfer our 450 guests from the port of Piraeus to Athens airport. To make it more “fun” for the guests, we had our hostesses act as ticket collectors on these public buses . . .
All guests made their flights with a smile . . . »

euromic, recently announced that Walpax Brazil Travel Partners has joined the association as a new member DMC in the Brazil. Walpax, founded in 1963, specializes in developing tailor-made programs for incentives, meetings, FITs, tour series and special interest groups throughout Brazil.
"euromic is proud to welcome Walpax as our association's partner in Brazil,” says Mr. Karim El Minabawy, President of euromic. “The company's dedicated staff, close network of suppliers and commitment to collaboration with clients results in a level of service in keeping with euromic's stringent standards."
“Membership in euromic serves as a quality seal and recognizes our professionalism and excellent team performance,” says Mrs. Anna Nagy, Director of Walpax. “The warmth of the Brazilians plays an important role in the way we do business. Our main philosophy is our dedication to serving as ‘your office in Brazil’.”
From Rio de Janeiro to Salvador, and from the Amazon to Iguazu Falls, Brazil features a diverse array of experiences, including rainforest, waterfalls, beaches, mountains, and exciting city life. With world-class hotel infrastructure, rich gastronomy, modern industry, up to date technology and varied entertainment and shopping, Brazil has become more and more attractive to the MICE market. In addition, the world's eyes will be on Brazil this year with the planet's largest party, Carnival in Rio in February & March, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in June & July, highlighting all this destination has to offer.
euromic recently began 2014 with its Annual General Meeting, held January 17-20 in Cairo, Egypt. The event provided representatives from euromic's 36 member DMCs the opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, welcome new members, discuss association and industry issues with client and media representatives and lay out plans for the years ahead.
The Assembly adopted a major change within the Association: the “World Affiliates” concept will disappear immediately and all current World Affiliates will become full members. New entrants will also be welcomed as regular Euromic members. After almost 10 years, both members and World Affiliates (destinations outside Europe and the Mediterranean) felt it was time to eliminate this distinction and present all members as part of a global Association.
The gathering, held in Cairo as a testament to the association's commitment to the region and its members there, was generously sponsored by the Egypt Ministry of Tourism, Egyptair, the Cairo Marriott Hotel and euromic's member in Egypt, Emeco Travel. The hosts organized an incentive-style meeting which featured visits to many of Egypt's top sights and venues, including the Pyramids of Giza, the Egyptian Museum, the Mena House and a post-tour Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan.
In addition to the meeting and social functions, both a special award dinner and educational seminar were highlights of the event. The award dinner, held at the Salon Royal of the historical palace of the Cairo Marriott Hotel, was graciously attended by H.E. Mr. HishamZaazou, the Egyptian Minister of Tourism, and featured honorary tributes to euromic's past presidents from the association's 40 year history: Harry Baum, Jean-Claude Murat, Herbert Uhlir, Issy Scher, Elhamy ElZayat, Marc Dans, H.E. Munir Nassar and Giancarlo Carrera.
“Recognizing our past Presidents was the least this second generation of euromic members could have done to thank those eight leaders who worked to keep our Association on the cutting edge of the MICE business over the past 40 years," says Mr. Karim El Minabawy, President of euromic. "Activities and expansions agreed upon over this 41st annual general assembly are to ensure that euromic will continue its leading position for future decades.”
Following the meeting, members, industry guests and press offered their expertise for full-day seminar on the motivational business, which was well attended by local inbound operators and Egyptologists.

While technology, the economy and various trends have led to many changes and adjustments in our industry, for many of euromic's DMCs one thing has remained a constant - the importance of family within the business. Some of our DMCs are staffed by multiple family members, many of them second generation owners.
For many, the passion for the business is inherited and they choose to follow the family path. This tradition means years of knowledge can be passed down. There are many other benefits from a business standpoint, including a long-term outlook and focus on developing relationships with returning clientele. Communication is key in these companies as familiar relationships mesh with business connections.
While some have inherited or taken over the company (Austria, Croatia, Denmark, Germany and Turkey) and some have family-at-large members involved (in Egypt and Morocco), some of euromic's DMCs are staffed today with multiple direct family members: the Holts in France, the Warrens in Great Britain, the Birgissons in Iceland, the Argiris in Greece, the Kohlis in India, the Cerrutis in Italy, the Teyemasin The Netherlands, the Riisnaeses in Norway, the Hulewiczs in Poland, the Risbeckers in Sweden, the Merinos in Spain, the Carreras in Switzerland and the Sudasnas in Thailand.
Pauline Risbecker Kim took over management of Risbecker International, Sweden, in 2004 from her father, Tom Risbecker, who had established the business in 1977 as a family corporation. "We are a family company and we take pride in protecting our brand name because, after all, we are the Risbeckers," she says.
With such family-owned businesses, clients can count on consistent service, philosophies and a commitment to results.

A Page from the History Books:
40 years ago last month, euromic's founding members gathered in Paris on the initiative of Jean-Claude Murat. Following a February 4th, 1973 meeting of the Common Market Travel Association (CMT) for European and Mediterranean tour planners, Mr. Murat made a presentation on incentive travel for those interested in the fast-growing North American market. During that informal meeting it was decided to create an incentive division within CMT. The name EUROMIC was proposed and adopted - beginning the association that remains today.
Making History Today:
Sharing in the celebration this year is Site, also celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2013!
euromic was one of the proud sponsors of the recent Site Executive Summit held in Cairo, Egypt. Our own Karim El Minabawy and Rajeev Kohli were in attendance at the event, which aimed to deliver fundamentals and forward thinking to professionals in the industry.
For more information, please visit the Site website here.
euromic, celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year, began 2013 with its Annual General Meeting, held January 11-13 in Paris, France, the birth place of the Association. The gathering allowed for members to reconnect and reflect upon the past 40 years and resulted in the election of a new President, Mr. Karim El Minabawy, and new Board of Directors.
As part of the festivities, the Association has adopted a commemorative logo and unveiled an updated website (www.euromic.com), which is designed to integrate social media and provide an even more appealing and accessible resource to meeting and incentive professionals.
New to euromic are Travel Places of Great Britain and Event Masters in Belgium. The two DMCs underwent a careful and thorough selection process in order to ensure they met euromic's stringent qualifications before being voted in by the membership.
Great Britain's exciting and varied cities, beautiful countryside, stunning coastline and historical sites give planners plenty of options when selecting a meeting or incentive destination. On the mainland, Belgium's central location, rich history, delicious food and cultural attractions have been drawing increasing numbers of events.

Recently, euromic, together with its local World Affiliate, Nature Style and LAN Airlines sponsored an US educational trip to Argentina.
Each guest travelled on convenient, overnight flights to Buenos Aires via LAN’s Miami and Los Angeles gateways. Built by European immigrants, Buenos Aires features wide boulevards, leafy parks, grand buildings and varied culture and nightlife. While in the city, participants explored the neighborhoods of Puerto Madero, San Telmo, La Boca and Recoleta and also visited the surrounding countryside (pampas) at the grand Estancia Villa Maria. A highlight of their trip was a tango lesson and dinner show at Tango Porteno. While they enjoyed their stay at the Park Tower Buenos Aires Hotel, they also had the opportunity to visit the Faena Hotel+Universe, the Sheraton Buenos Aires Hotel & Convention Center, the St. Regis, the Sofitel Buenos Aires Hotel and the Alvear Palace Hotel.
Following their time in Buenos Aires, a comfortable LAN flight transported the participants to Mendoza, situated at the feet of the Andes and home of Malbec.
Participants enjoyed the views and outstanding wine at two local bodegas (wineries), the Bodega Lagarde and the Bodega Catena Zapata. City highlights included the Plaza Pedro Castillo, the Parque San Martin, the Plaza Espana, Cerro de la Gloria and Plaza Independencia. In addition to the host hotel, the elegant Park Hyatt Mendoza, a site inspection of the Intercontinental Meddoza was arranged.
A layover in Santiago, Chile allowed for a quick tour of the city, including visits to the Plaza de Armas, the Cerro San Cristobal, the Los Dominicos Market and the Plaza San Francisco Hotel.
We would like to thank Liliana Rattigan, Vice President of Nature Style’s Incentive Division, Salome Penailillo, National M&I and TMC Manager at LAN, Claudio Garau, our tour guide, and Juan Carlos Rua, President of Nature Style, for their hard work in preparing an excellent introduction to all the opportunities Argentina provides to meeting and incentive planners.
euromic is proud to have been recently named to Special Events Magazine's 8th Annual Top 25 DMC List. As one of the Top 25 DMC consortiums, euromic was selected based on the following criteria; average number of DMC programs per year, estimated revenue, capabilities and noteworthy events.
"This recognition speaks to the excellence of each of our individual DMCs," says Giancarlo Carrera, President of euromic. "Together as a group we represent outstanding event and destination management in 36 destinations across the globe - and we are much honored to be a part of this year's list among such great company."
In addition, two of euromic's members were named individually in this year's list: Compass Tours Incoming, Germany and Destination China.
The G20 world leaders have, for the first time, recognized the importance of travel and tourism as a driver of jobs, growth and economic recovery. The recognition was part of the Leaders’ Declaration from the annual meeting of the G20 held in Los Cabos, Mexico, June 18-19, 2012.
"We recognize the role of travel and tourism as a vehicle for job creation, economic growth and development, and, while recognizing the sovereign right of States to control the entry of foreign nationals, we will work towards developing travel facilitation initiatives in support of job creation, quality work, poverty reduction and global growth,” the declaration said.
According to WTTC the industry directly will contribute $2 trillion in GDP and 100 million jobs to the global economy in 2012. When the wider economic impacts of the industry are taken into account, travel and tourism is forecast to contribute some $6.5 trillion to the global economy and generate 260 million jobs – or 1 in 12 of all jobs on the planet.
Research by UNWTO and WTTC, released at the T20 Ministers Meeting last May, showed that the G20 could boost their international tourist numbers by an additional 122 million, generate an extra US$ 206 billion in tourism exports and create over five million additional jobs by 2015 by improving visa processes and entry formalities.
Findings showed that of the 656 million international tourists who visited G20 countries in 2011, an estimated 110 million needed a visa, many of whom were deterred from traveling by the cost, waiting time and difficulty of obtaining a visa. Facilitating visas for these tourists, many from some of the world’s fastest growing source markets such as the BRICs, could stimulate demand, spending and ultimately create millions of new jobs in the G20 economies.
euromic has recently announced that it has added a new World Affiliate in Dubai, Emeco Tourism in the Emirates. The company, which has been operating under the name Al Abjar Tourism since 2003, has long been a leader within the tourism sector in the Emirates.
"euromic is thrilled to welcome Emeco Tourism in the Emirates into our select association,” says Mr. Giancarlo Carrera, President of euromic. “They are a true destination management company capable of saving our clients time and money with solid contacts and a flair for creative programs. It is a privilege to count them among us."
In recent years, Dubai has emerged as both an international business center and a tourism hotspot. The Emirates encompass a wide variety of scenery and activities in a relatively small area, making it possible to experience sand dunes, mountains and beaches in one day.
Meeting and convention facilities, modern hotels and a multitude of dining and entertainment choices are readily available throughout the region. The Dubai International Airport, hub for Emirates Airlines, provides easy accessibility with direct flights from over 200 points around the world. Emeco Tourism in the Emirates also operates a joint venture in Muscat, the capital city of Oman, to assist planners interested in combining and/or extending their Emirates experience with this unique destination.
“euromic stands for excellence in destination management and we are honored to become a part of this organization,” says Mr. Elhamy El Zayat, Chairman of Emeco Tourism in the Emirates. Mr. Karim Aly, General Manager, added: “We are excited to introduce many more visitors to the bustling souks and majestic desert of Dubai through this prestigious association.”

According to Site International Foundation’s Site Index: Annual Survey 2012, released in January, the industry is experiencing a stable situation with small variations evident since last year’s annual survey. 89 percent of respondents reported that the overall use of motivational travel would increase or substantially increase in one to three years, setting an optimistic outlook for the future.
“What makes the optimism in this Site Index release interesting is that participants represented the pulse of 25 countries,” says Stephen D. Powell, 2012 Site International Foundation president and senior vice president worldwide sales, Inter Continental Hotels Group.
In evaluating their views on the strength of reward types, respondents’ rated motivational travel as the most favorable, another positive indication for the incentive travel industry. After experiencing increasing inclusion of business meetings in motivational events in recent years, the study also found that this practice seems to have leveled off.
Complete survey results are available at www.siteglobal.com
Also, please kindly note, the new euromic 2012 brochure is now available at www.euromic.com/euromic2012.pdf (requires Adobe Acrobat).

The inaugural IMEX America tradeshow in Las Vegas was a true global event for our industry. 30 participants from our 37 destinations represented euromic – and all of our members enjoyed meeting new business contacts and reconnecting with established clients. The show also provided an excellent opportunity to introduce our newest members from Luxembourg, Costa Rica and Thailand.
IMEX America brought us back to the golden days of US MICE tradeshows due to the high quality buyers and wide array of domestic and international suppliers. US hosted buyers adapted quickly to the scheduled individual and group appointments. We heard many positive comments about how much they learned over the three trade show days, which were packed with free workshops.
Congratulations to Rajeev Kohli, who just received not one but two Site Crystal Awards at the Site Annual Conference in Las Vegas! Creative Travel, our World Affiliate in India, won for “the Best Program in Asia” and also for “the Overall Best Destination-based Program”.
These awards would not have been possible without the support and wishes of all our friends.

He is currently representing the industry as Vice-Chairman of the bureau. We are honored to take a look back at euromic’s early years as a tribute to Issy Scher, a man who has always been on the forefront with his brilliant ideas. His vision and guidance have led our organization through turbulent years filled with countless hard-earned successes. Many of you have benefited from Issy’s expertise. We hope these milestones will bring back good memories of his contributions to our 38-year history:
1976 - Albany Travel of Tel Aviv, Israel was accepted as a member of euromic. This was the first successful effort to expand the horizons of the consortium, as initially it was a closed club limited to “Destination Europe”.
1977 - Issy served as a member of the Board delegation with Harry Baum and Herbert Uhlir, which signed the agreement to open the euromic office in Chicago.
1981 - Issy was elected Chairman of the Board. Emeco Travel in Egypt was invited to become a member – a further important expansion of euromic’s “borders”. This paved the way for other Middle Eastern and North African countries to later join.
1982 - Issy pushed for a further expansion of euromic’s activities. It was agreed that euromic also needed to become fully involved in Europe and therefore the Board opened a marketing office in Paris.
1983 - Issy initiated the idea of the first euromic “Showcase” - held in Dallas, Houston and Atlanta. These popular road shows continued for a number of years.
1984 - Issy conceived and ran the highly successful “Motivation Egypt” event in Cairo. All Euromic members were invited to participate. This professional incentive seminar aired on Egypt television and was attended by many high-level industry leaders.
Over the past decade many of you have gotten to know Issy in a different capacity, as a partner in Destination China. His vast knowledge of our industry contributed to the growth of Destination China, which joined euromic in 2005 as the first World Affiliate. The initiative to invite companies into the euromic consortium from outside of the traditional geographic territory was also spearheaded by Issy.
We will all miss Issy’s wisdom and wish him the best as he takes this well-deserved break to follow his wide range of interests.
Please feel free to send any well wishes to Issy at email@example.com.
- Your Friends at Euromic -

euromic recently announced that it has added a new World Affiliate in Southeast Asia, CDM – Creative Destination Management of Thailand. The company, which has been operating top-quality programs in Thailand since 1988, was officially inducted into euromic on July 1, 2011.
“euromic is thrilled to welcome a Thai World Affiliate as we expand our roster of unique and exciting destinations for MICE travel,” says Mr. Giancarlo Carrera, President of euromic. “CDM – Creative Destination Management’s experience, imagination, expertise and local influence are sure to be of great value to our association and the travel planners we work with.”

News about DMCs (Source www.meetingsreview.com):
With debates turning towards destination management companies (DMCs) and their relevance post recession, Mary MacGregor, vice president of business development at BCD Meetings and Incentives and 2011 President Site Global, said that her company believed they were vital with respect to engaging local expertise for motivational events and adding value to clients.
She also mentioned three trends. The first was the push towards strategic preferred relationships with DMCs, with, say, two preferred partners being chosen per destination with the view of building up a reliable and strong relationship to enable more consistency in the standard of events created. Second, MacGregor said that using online tools to manage DMC relationships was on the increase, particularly with respect to contracts and insurance. Third, she explained that the growing role of procurement had led to the need for DMCs to be more transparent with respect to the services they offer and their charges.
When explaining how she justified DMC charges to her clients in addition to those of her agency’s, MacGregor answered: “I say that in the same way my client has a core business, so does my agency and the DMC. It’s all about tapping in to a specific area of expertise and you generate value by having a relationship with an expert on site.”
This dedication to providing excellent value for our clients is the heart of euromic’s philosophy. We are committed to maintaining the highest degree of integrity while providing the best possible service to you.

Looking back at 2010, euromic saw a year of slow recovery in most sectors of the economy in almost all world regions. In the United States, unemployment remains high at around 10 percent with no relief in sight. However, the weak US growth has started to push the dollar lower yet again, which benefits US-inbound traffic.
The performance of European economies during the past year has been highly differentiated. Some countries on the periphery have still been struggling to tackle spiraling budget deficits. Others – with their exports-led economies – are pointing towards further recovery.
Economists continued to be divided on whether the global recovery would grow, stall, or even be reversed. However, the vast majority of indicators for the meetings, incentives and events industry point to improved business conditions – and euromic is optimistic for great success in the coming year…
Next week, euromic members will be attending the Association’s Annual General Meeting in Riga, hosted by Baltic Travel Group, euromic’s Destination Management Company in the Baltic States.
The week after, several members will attend together FITUR 2011 in Madrid (Jan19-23, 2011): Brussels International Travel Service (Belgium), Blaguss Event.pro (Czech Republic), Holland Experts (Netherlands), Mazurkas Travel – DMC Poland (Poland), M&C Travel Service (Portugal), SM Travel (Switzerland) and Destination China (China).
Meet them in Pavilion 8 Stand 8E30

After a tumultuous 24 months, the meetings industry is finally on the mend, according to travel buyers. 60 percent said they feel the meetings market is stable, Maxvantage reported today upon releasing the results of its latest poll, the Travel Buyers Survey.
Maxvantage surveyed 90 business travel buyers in June and, based on its findings, concluded that a “mild recovery” is evident.
“Across the industry attitudes are increasingly optimistic as corporations are starting to invest in meetings again and travel and meeting professionals begin scheduling meetings,” said Maxvantage Vice President Issa Jouaneh. “This renewed demand is making availability more challenging and is resulting in slight rate increases.” Compared to six months ago, Maxvantage found, only 9 percent of travel buyers say they find it easier to negotiate terms and conditions, versus 18 percent in December 2009. Meanwhile, 37 percent say they find it more challenging to find available meeting space, versus 18 percent in December; 30 percent that they find it more challenging to negotiate lower rates, versus 18 percent; and 27 percent that they find the sourcing process more difficult, versus 9 percent.
Increased meetings demand isn’t just making it harder to find and negotiate meeting space, however. It’s also making it more expensive to book accommodations, according to Maxvantage, which reported a stabilization of falling hotel rates during the first and second quarter of 2010.
“With market conditions changing, and indicators pointing to a move back toward a seller’s market, it is essential that meeting professionals stay focused and aware of current trends happening in the industry,” said Maxvantage Senior Vice President and General Manager Steve O’Malley. “Over the course of the past two years, because of the buyer’s market environment, year-over-year savings has been easier to achieve. With prices firming, it’s critical to look at all parts of the meeting equation — participant count increases, room and food and beverage rates, and firmer terms and conditions — to ensure meetings are achieving the desired return on investment and optimal savings.”
Throughout the past 37 years, euromic and its members have proven their ability to adapt to such industry changes. Each member and world affiliate has an intimate knowledge of their destination and is up-to-date on the latest developments. When you are looking for a local events and destination manager who can save you time and money with a solid local contacts and a flair for creative programs, be sure to team up with a euromic member or world affiliate.

euromic can only be extremely proud to have those two companies in its midst, along with all of those who provided Value and Comfort to their clients during the Volcanic Ash Crisis.
Last month, we included a feature on the latter subject; the piece had been featured in several industry publications and recognized several euromic members.
The article trigged some very positive reactions:
“Congratulations to your euromic DMCs... so nice for the rest of the world to see the value the DMCs bring to the table! This is terrific!”
“euromic DMCs are by far the very best at their respective destinations. I have exclusively been using euromic DMC members for many years, and all have always provided me and my clients with exceptional services”.
“I am not surprised that euromic’s DMCS superbly coped with such unforeseen emergencies. My company has been constantly using euromic DMCS to my complete satisfaction”
“I’ve been looking for such reliable and quick action DMCs. Now I know where to look for them. Have just checked the euromic website and now am convinced to exclusively use euromic members for all my groups.”
“I was recently compelled to switch from my long time DMC to another DMC. My client just returned from Europe and RAVED about my new DMC for his superb services. I just now realized that my new DMC is a euromic member. Will check the euromic website and will now switch all my DMCs to euromic DMCs.”
“We have been using euromic DMC members for as long as I remember, and this means at least 20 years.”
“We have been evaluating and rating all our worldwide DMCS on a scale of 10. The euromic DMCS earn the highest ratings from all others: France: 9.3; Italy: 8.9; Holland: 9.4; Greece: 9.8; Turkey: 8.7; Egypt: 9.3; Austria: 8.6”
“Out of so many companies representing DMCs, euromic stands out far and wide. We use euromic’s DMCs and will continue to use them — they are the top best.”
Thank you to everyone who commented on our success!
Often, travel programs run smoothly and, even when professionals are working tirelessly behind the scenes, it can be easy to forget the value that Destination Management Companies offer planners. Sometimes, however, outside forces intervene and travel planners need someone on the ground on whom to rely. Recently, such crises have given euromic DMCs an opportunity to step up and remind the industry of the importance of having a local partner.
April, 2010 posed a veritable nightmare for the travel industry. Amid the spewing of massive ash clouds from the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, aviation authorities brought air traffic in the skies over Northern Europe to a halt.
During these unprecedented closures, members of the DMC consortium euromic clearly demonstrated “the power of local knowledge” to their clients, including meeting, event, and congress planners, as well as FIT travelers. Here are some concrete examples:
- Spanish Heritage in Barcelona stressed how important it was that their client, a pharmaceutical company, had emergency cellular numbers for staff members, who could be reached 24 hours a day. This allowed the DMC to quickly change or cancel plans and keep the client up to date.
- In Vienna, an emergency team was quickly assembled by Blaguss event.pro to work with clients around the clock. The Blaguss staff arranged for many congress visitors, some travelling from as far as Moscow, to return home by bus or train.
- Further east, guests of ODS Turkey also learned they were being well looked after. The ODS Turkey response team distributed “Emergency Kits,” which contained snacks, medicine, pillows, socks and other items to keep the client comfortable and calm while alternative plans were being made. As ground services were in high-demand, the DMC was able move busses in from Germany and Slovakia in order to transport travelers home from Istanbul.
- Meanwhile, Amiel Destination Management in Israel, through its strong relationships with local properties, negotiated special rates on hotel extensions for travelers unable to return from the Holy Land. These relationships also allowed Amiel to reschedule some groups’ hotel and tour arrangements without fees or to ensure that costly cancellation penalties would be covered by their contracts with suppliers.
- Holland Experts in Amsterdam reports that it was also able to financially protect many of their clients from fees imposed by suppliers, waiving costs fully or partially where possible. And when Amsterdam was one of the first airports to reopen, they assisted in transporting rerouted travelers to their final destinations in Europe.
- When the airport in Riga closed, Baltic Travel Group arranged bus services for seminar participants from Moscow with a 2 hour turnaround. Guests arrived in plenty of time to catch an already-scheduled ferry to Stockholm. And in addition to special rates and protections, Baltic Travel Group extended credit for guests requiring emergency extensions.
- Volcanoes are not the only worries either. In early May, news of “austerity measures” in Greece – which increased VAT and reduced entitlements – sparked general strikes and violent demonstrations. Conceptours skillfully avoided the strikes by transferring a VIP incentive group from Athens to the islands of Santorini on a high speed hydrofoil.
When it comes to adverse conditions, the situation in each destination is unique. In each of these cases, DMCs were able to use their in-depth knowledge of services in their own land to provide creative solutions to big problems. The logistical know-how and powerful negotiating position with suppliers each euromic DMC possesses can help minimize adverse financial impacts from unforeseeable events.
And since they offer on-site presence, emergency contacts, and an intense dedication to creating safe, unforgettable experiences for guests – even during the worst-case scenario – the value of a euromic DMC goes beyond the bottom line. They offer planners and guests the local expertise and piece of mind that comes with being in the most capable hands.
Once again, euromic is proud to be an association partner of IMEX!

Benchmark Hospitality International, a leading hospitality management company which operates 30 award-winning conference hotels, resorts, and conference centres in the USA and in Asia, announces its \"Top Ten Meeting Trends for 2010\" as observed by its properties:
Trend #1 - Cautiously Optimistic for 2010, with Strong Pacing for 2011!
Demand for corporate meetings is up in 2010 over last year’s results and is steadily increasing. Although early, meeting providers are cautiously optimistic for the year and are experiencing a booking pace that is ahead of 2009. Those that came into the year with solid planner-provider relationships in place are realizing once again their importance. A highly positive signal is that the overall pace is up significantly for advance bookings in 2011.
Trend #2 - Booking in the Month, for the Month in 2010... but at least meetings aren’t cancelling!
The booking window for corporate meetings remains very short term – from 30 – 45 days and is basically in the month for the month. Planners are unwilling to commit too far out and risk cancellation and other penalties, given the economic times. Fortunately, it seems the cancellation of meetings, experienced by so many providers throughout 2009, is a thing of the past!
Trend #3 - Extreme Price Sensitivity, with Hotels once again competing for Meetings Business with Aggressive Package Pricing.
The recession and the AIG effect caused many traditional hotels to turn to midsized corporate meetings to fill their rooms. Although not an uncommon strategy for hotels in a recession, the severe business climate of 2009 helped re-educate traditional hotels on the merits of aggressive meeting package pricing with its high perceived value. The lingering legacy of this is extreme price sensitivity in 2010. Those conference centre providers that stayed steady, maintained service levels and nurtured strong customer relationships in spite of wrenching times are emerging stronger.
Trend #4 - Meeting Groups are Smaller in 2010 and Carving a Day off their Stay.
Meeting groups are considerably smaller than previously, in some cases down by 50 percent. Meetings in 2010 tend to regional vs. national, have become much more serious in their content - replacing social functions and special dinners with working sessions, and are trimmed by at least a day to reduce pressure on budgets.
Trend #5 -Being Green is now generally assumed, but for certain segments, such as Federal & State Government and Education business, it’s a requirement.
For corporate groups, meeting providers are generally expected to have green programs in place, although this is not yet universally required by corporate America. For federal and state government business as well as the education segment, however, properties must meet basic green hospitality requirements to even be considered for a meeting or event this year.
Trend #6 - No Frills Meetings are ROI driven and have pushed Teambuilding, the Spa and the Golf Course onto the back burner.
There is no room for bells and whistles in the 2010 meetings climate of tight and highly scrutinized budgets. Meeting spending is seriously conservative, highly image conscious, and focused on the basics with little attention paid to the spa or a round of golf. Teambuilding, if it occurs, is integrated into the body of a meeting as there is little time to set aside for an afternoon on the high and low ropes courses.
Trend #7 - Maximum Internet Bandwidth is the expectation for Planners this year. All other technology demands are eclipsed by this.
In 2010, planners are not interested in the most advanced, cutting edge meeting technology available. Conversely, they’re coming to negotiations with the expectation that a hotel, resort or conference center will have current meeting technology installed. What they are demanding, however, it that providers be able to provide maximum connectivity to support online content and applications during the meeting. This is of critical importance universally.
Trend #8 - Today’s planner is a fierce price negotiator, and feels empowered to expect concessions.
Τhe aftermath of 2009 is that planners come to pricing discussions today armed with negotiation skills carefully honed over the last 12-18 months. Their expectation is for properties to extend significant concessions across the board to pump up value for the meetings budget. The silver lining to this is the renewed appreciation planners are expressing for the value and importance of the complete meeting package, the traditional product of conference centres internationally.
Trend #9 - Health-conscious Food & Beverage Options Scrutinized. Buffets for All
Part of maximizing a meetings budget is ensuring conferees remain strategically focused on the meeting content. A proper, healthy and protein-rich diet can significantly aid in keeping meeting participants attentive and their energy levels maximized. Consequently, planners are scrutinizing menus and buffets like never before. And for the first time, because of their high perceived value, healthy buffets are seen as perfectly acceptable for all executives – even those from Fortune 500 companies! Out of the dining room, conferees are hitting the fitness centres, walking trails and pools like never before. A healthy body is clearly perceived to be important for a sharp and productive mind.
Trend #10 - Social Media and the Meetings Industry … LinkedIn, Trip Advisor, and Facebook Friends
Social media is all the rage in 2010, but not in the meetings business. Although properties are increasingly turning to Facebook and Twitter for their leisure and consumer business, the corporate meetings segment is still reliant on old-fashioned face-to-face contact. LinkedIn and Trip Advisor, however, are growing in importance to planners as they seek information and customer feedback on properties they are considering. Additionally, an increasing number of planners are using Facebook to “friend” sales executives from provider properties with whom they’ve developed a relationship, offering another channel of friendly and casual contact to solidify a business exchange. In 2010, relationships actively nurtured in old and new media are a reliable pillar of success.

euromic officially announced today that Travel Motives, South Africa, has joined the organization as a World Affiliate destination management company. euromic members voted unanimously to include Travel Motives in the association at the Annual General Meeting in January.
“The wealth of experience and professionalism our team possesses is what’s behind our euromic Affiliation,” said Dayle White, General Manager at Travel Motives. “We are pleased to be a part of one of the oldest consortiums of companies specializing in full service destination management. South Africa is a land of immense possibilities: if you can dream it, Travel Motives will deliver it with the high level of service standards expected from all euromic DMCs.”
Based in Johannesburg, Travel Motives offers full service meeting, incentive, and group travel programs within southern Africa. South Africa and its neighbors have proved to be growing and important destinations, offering planners new, exciting travel programs for their clients. While traditional, luxury facilities abound, itineraries in South Africa also provide ample options for those with a sense of adventure and a taste for the extraordinary.
Part of the success of Travel Motives is a corporate culture rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu – the idea that our humanity is formed through participation in a community. This is expressed in the traditional Zulu adage, “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu,” which means, “a person is only a person through their relationship with others.” This commitment to mutual respect informs Travel Motives’ client interactions. It also shows a unique understanding of what meeting and incentive travel are all about: maximizing potential by strengthening relationships.
Italian Destination Management Company Gastaldi Global Travel has joined forces with euromic, the oldest international consortium of companies specializing in MICE travel. Gastaldi, based in Rome, was officially inducted as euromic’s 29th full member on January 9th at the Association’s Annual General Meeting in Dublin, Ireland.
Founded in 1990, Gastaldi Global Travel provides destination management services for VIPs and groups of all sizes. Its corporate mission has earned the company a reputation as one of Italy’s top DMCs. The philosophy is rooted a deep appreciation for their clients’ unique needs and striving to assist them in meeting program goals through creative itineraries that combine authentic Italian style with local expertise and a buying power that provides a high degree of value.
In a message to the travel industry, Mr. Giancarlo Carrera, President of euromic, said, “Italy continues to be one of the top destinations in Europe for incentive travel. Gastaldi Global Travel has an excellent record as well as the quality staff and local pull that clients expect from euromic DMCs. Gastaldi is the right partner for us – and the travel planners we work with – in Italy.”
In addition to its Rome headquarters, Gastaldi Global Travel has Genova and Milan. The company specializes in high end meeting and incentive travel, special interest tours and top VIP individual programs all over Italy. With a thorough knowledge of Italian territory and logistics, Gastaldi is able to create and manage “one-off” programs, which focus on providing the best program solutions for each event. This is expressed in the company motto: “We do not simply sell incentive programs; we offer a unique experience and help our clients to achieve their goals.”

Two recent industry surveys confirm the importance of travelling and in-person meetings.
First, a study conducted by global research firm Oxford Economics, sponsored by the Destination & Travel Foundation, establishes the first clear link between business travel and business growth. The result show a strong relationship between a company’s investment in business travel - to meetings, trade shows, conferences, incentive and sales meetings - and its profitability. For every dollar invested in business travel, businesses experience $12.50 on average in increased revenue and $3.80 in new profits, according to the findings. It is the first time that the ROI of business travel has been successfully measured.
The study also found that curbing business travel can have a significant negative impact on corporate profits. The average business in the U.S. would forfeit 17 percent of its profits in the first year of eliminating business travel, and it would take more than three years for profits to recover. More than half of all business travellers stated that between 5 and 20 percent of their companies’ new customers were the result of trade show participation and executives estimate that 28 percent of current business would be lost without face-to-face meetings. Approximately 40% of prospective customers are converted to new customers as a result of face-to-face meetings.
Second, according to a pre-conference survey for the HSMAI Affordable Meetings National & Event Technology Expo in Washington DC, many planners feel that certain elements of face-to-face conferences cannot be duplicated with meetings technology. 76 percent of meeting planners attending the event said in a survey that they used technology mostly for marketing efforts, followed by making presentations (68 percent) and networking (56 percent).
The survey results suggest technology cannot replace at least six elements of the conference experience: socialising and networking spontaneously, helping attendees, putting faces to names, allowing free and open dialogue between attendees and vendors/presenters, effective training, and a high quality and fluidity of conversation not subject to technical interference.
This week, euromic is attending CIBTM 2009 (The China Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings Exhibition) taking place at the new venue China National Convention Centre, Beijing, on 8-10 September 2009 together with a selected group of Conferences and Incentives Buyers from Europe.

According to the June edition of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer international tourism declined by 8% between January and April compared to the same period last year.
Destinations worldwide recorded a total of 247 million international tourist arrivals in those four months, down from 269 million in 2008. Given the changes in the outlook UNWTO has revised its forecast for the full year 2009. Taking account of the results for the first four months of the year and the current market conditions, international tourism is now forecast to decrease by between 4% and 6% in 2009, as the pace of decline is expected to ease during the remainder of 2009.
With the exception of Africa, all regions recorded a decrease in arrivals for the first four months of 2009:
In Europe (-10%), the impact was high as the majority of source markets have struggled with recession since the end of 2008. Moreover, outbound tourism of the second largest market (UK) has endured the depreciation of the pound sterling.
Overall, the Americas (-5%) have suffered due to the slowdown of the USA both as a source market and a destination. Still, South America was the only sub-region outside of Africa to buck the general downward trend, registering +0.2%.
For Asia and the Pacific (-6%) the decline in demand has been faster than expected and is particularly severe when compared to results from recent years.
Although the decline in the Middle East is significant (-18%), complete data is not available and arrivals are still expected to be well above the 2007 levels.
The positive results in Africa (+3%) reflect the strength of North African destinations around the Mediterranean and the recovery of Kenya as one of leading Sub-Saharan destinations.
Tourism is seriously impacted, given the sharp reduction in business activity, decreasing disposable income and associated increased unemployment, particularly in key tourism source markets. Exchange rate fluctuations have added to the general uncertainty and business and consumer confidence have yet to recover. Furthermore, the level of advanced bookings, coupled with the reduction of in airline capacity, make recovery before 2010 difficult.
Travel & Tourism can be part of the solution
Against a progressively more difficult environment, UNWTO has been increasing its efforts to provide the sector, and its Members in particular, with the necessary support to face these challenging times under the Roadmap for Recovery.
Travel and tourism can support short-term stimulus actions, namely those aimed at creating and sustaining jobs, as well as the long-term transformation to a green economy.
Tourism is one of the largest employment sectors in most countries and a fast entry vehicle into the workforce for young people and women in urban and rural communities, directly, or through its strong multiplier effect on related services, manufacturing or agriculture.
Actions are needed to boost trade promotion, simplify regulation, build infrastructure and rationalise taxes, which in turn incite companies to invest, innovate and stimulate demand. This kind of public-private sector collaboration should be strongly advanced within and between all states – it will help build resilience and recovery across economies.

Benchmark Hospitality International, a leading hospitality management company which operates 30 award-winning conference hotels, resorts, and conference centres in the USA and in Asia, announces its \"Top Ten Meeting Trends for 2009,\" as observed by its properties:
Trend #1 The Business of Meetings is Business
This year more than ever before, the business of meetings is straight-up ROI. There\'s not a lot of room for leisure and extracurricular play where every single dollar is measured for its contribution to the success of the overall conference. Meetings have never been more serious, focused, or strategic -- or more regional.
Trend #2 It\'s Not Easy to be Green...
It\'s not easy to be green ... or at least it\'s not easy to be green in a challenged economy! Planners are a whole lot more focused at present on securing that property at the best price possible for their next meeting. In 2009, price trumps green.
Trend #3 We\'ll Get Back to you in Six Months
The first half of 2009 is proving to be a challenge with a lot of in-the-month-for-the-month meetings booked.
Things are looking up in the 2nd half of 2009 though.
Trend #4 Stuffed, Packed, Studded with Value!
The demise of the complete meeting package is greatly exaggerated! But packages are expected to be loaded with value, add-on benefits, and there\'s a growing demand for double occupancy. Every meeting dollar must be measurable and welcome receptions, afternoons of leisure, and special dinner events are out. Working lunches and dinners, regional gatherings, doubling up in guestrooms and value-added options are what are in this year!
Trend #5 Believe It or Not, Teambuilding Remains!
Teambuilding is not D.O.A. Planners are negotiating hard on price, and fewer sessions are being scheduled this year over last, but companies continue to see value in the team-enrichment benefits offered through creative teambuilding programming, such as corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Trend #6 Tea for Two (make it herbal), Tee Times for Twenty
Maybe not this year. Tight budgets and serious meeting environments are taking their toll on extracurricular activities once so popular. There\'s no problem getting a spa or tee time this year, but it will be on the conferee\'s own dime and it better not be scheduled over a conference session.
Trend #7 I Plan, Therefore I Am
Once again the industry is consolidating. Planning is increasingly seen as a part-time function ... with planning responsibilities loaded on already overwhelmed administrative personnel and department heads. And third party planners are re-emerging.
Trend #8 Three Squares a Day. That\'s it!
Gone are the welcome receptions, theme dinners and special luncheons. Planners\' meal requests are pretty much limited to three square meals a day and that\'s it.
Trend #9 The Silver Lining
That\'s right ... there\'s a silver lining and it\'s found within select market segments where meeting demand is growing. These include government, military and defense-related meetings, as well as education, state associations and religious market gatherings. Perhaps this should make sense in these times. There\'s more. The medical, biotech and pharmaceutical segments remain strong too. Serious market segments for serious times, it seems - perfect for serious meeting environments.
Trend #10 Getting Serious About Learning Environments
Productive meeting environments have never been more put to the test or proven their worth more actively than right now. In a business environment where every dollar - every penny for that matter -- is meaningful and expected to yield a measurable ROI, dedicated meeting environments like conference centers deliver and planners are turning to them.

euromic – THE Destination Management Partnership in Europe and the MediterraneanBasin – voted to admit Dubrovnik Travel, Croatia’s leading DMC and PCO, as its 29th official Member.
Croatia is a booming European destination, drawing nearly 10 million international visitors each year. In addition to offering many newly renovated properties, Croatia is easily accessible from international gateways and is just short flight away from dozens of major European cities. MICE business is a fast growing sector of Croatian tourism. Meeting and incentive planners looking for something fresh to “wow” their clients are increasingly eager to take advantage of the unique fusion of Central European culture and the stunning, luxurious Dalmatian coastline, a popular excursion for Mediterranean cruise programs. Visitors are especially attracted to the Old City in Dubrovnik, called “the Pearl of the Adriatic” by Lord Byron, was the medieval rival to Venice in culture and commerce and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
\"Dubrovnik Travel is proud to become part of the euromic tradition of excellence,” said Daniel Marusic, CEO of Dubrovnik Travel. Petra Podkubovsek Medic added, “This is a true testimonial to our years of hard work and dedication, and to our current position as Croatia ’s leading Destination Management Company. We look forward to the exciting new opportunities that membership in Euromic will offer us.”
Dubrovnik Travel was founded in 1998 and over the past decade has grown to become the foremost destination management company and professional congress organizer in Croatia. The company has offices in Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian city of Split. With a professional and multilingual staff, Dubrovnik Travel has the resources and expertise to organize and execute top-notch events throughout the country.
euromic is excited to announce the addition of Creative Travel in India to its roster of World Affiliates. The general membership of euromic unanimously approved Creative Travel’s nomination, ending an extensive search by the Board of Directors to find the most qualified and reliable DMC in the Indian Subcontinent.
Creative Travel planners, based in the capital city of New Delhi, are amongst India’s largest and one of its most respected destination management companies. Founded over 30 years ago, the company prides itself on its commitment to customer relationships and ability to deliver outstanding travel products. Core to these practices is adherence to the old Indian saying, “Atithi Devo Bhava” – or, “the guest is God,” referring to the ethos of hospitality so important to a culture dedicated to family and friendship. A privately owned transport fleet and dedicated PCO and high-value divisions allow Creative Travel to efficiently service any request with the greatest levels of professionalism and added value in the industry.
\"We at Creative Travel are delighted to join the euromic family. It is a pleasure to be in such an astute group of owner driven companies. Our attention to detail and creativity in planning is fostered by the independence given by our family ownership, which I would consider to be one of our biggest strengths. This, against our more corporatized competitors, gives us an inherent advantage in quality control, continuity in projects and accountability’ saidRajeev Kohli, Director of Marketing. “Backed by a team of over 120 professionals, the Kohlis and Creative Travel have earned a reputation for being amongst India\'s most quality conscious travel companies. What we offer is our reputation for our integrity, our creativity and our experience in managing travel to India and her region for over three decades. We are a company that believes that business is about building relationships. Reputation cannot be bought and we would never do anything to compromise the integrity and standards of our partners.\"

During the last week of September, euromic members and World Affiliates participated in the 2008 Motivation Show/IT&ME in Chicago. While attendance was down this year, the show was nonetheless fruitful, with many of euromic’s exhibitors reporting an unprecedented number of high-quality leads.
Trade Shows like the Motivation Show, EIBTM, and IMEX are important to us, not only for the business opportunities they present, but for internal purposes as well. They bring euromic’s membership together all in one place, so each year; the association uses these opportunities to hold an assembly of its members. Here are some of the highlights of the discussion at our recent meeting, which shed some light on where business is going in the next year.
North American incentive business to Europe was, in general, down over the last year, due to fluctuations in currency and the price per barrel of oil. Many incentive trips were, however, already confirmed for 2008 and were carried out successfully, and more business is still confirmed throughout 2009. However, the decline in incentive travel has offered euromic members to concentrate on congresses and ultra-high-end leisure travel, keeping overall business up. In addition, the changes in the world economy proved beneficial for some of our members. The euromic members outside the “Euro zone”, including those in Egypt, Dubai and even Switzerland and Iceland, have said they had the opportunity to offer clients a tremendous comparative value to clients.
While the United States and Canada remains an important source for incentive travel programs, it is certainly not the only market. Not only does intra-European business remain strong, but euromic members are seeing programs for new and exciting markets. Global shifts in financial leverage have seen new business coming to euromic from markets in South America, especially Argentina and Brazil; from the east, Indian, South African and Australian incentive travel companies are turning to euromic members for their unparalleled quality of service.
As international currency and oil prices stabilize, it is likely that Europe will again be flooded by incentives from North America. euromic members are continuing with business-as-usual, and look forward to providing you with high quality and best practices destination management services, no matter where you are.
euromic welcomed Unconventional Malta Ltd. as its 29th member. The addition of a Maltese DMC is another important step for euromic, offering clients consistent and high quality destination management services in nearly every major destination with shores on the Mediterranean Sea.
Unconventional Malta Ltd. is a multi-disciplined DMC providing live communications solutions to corporations and agencies, in the areas of conference, destination and event management. Dedicated to the development and execution of creative itineraries for major international conferences, meetings, incentives and VIPs, the company and its programs has received numerous awards due to unparalleled service in the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino.
With the addition of this new member, euromic, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, has grown to include member or World Affiliate companies in 34 destinations.
At the end of September, our euromic delegation will be exhibiting at The Motivation Show (IT&ME), September 23-25, 2008 at McCormick Place South, Chicago.
We are looking forward to Engage, Motivate, Inspire and Connectwith many Professionals at our euromic booth 3247. Come by and meet our members and World Affiliates!

According to the June edition of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, the first results for 2008 suggest the relative stability of international tourism. In spite of uncertainties posed by the global economy, international tourist arrivals grew at around 5% between January and April 2008, compared to the same period of 2007.
Prospects for international tourism remain positive, although the overall economic climate has deteriorated since the last quarter of 2007, reducing consumer confidence and putting pressure on household spending and travel budgets. UNWTO expects tourism demand to grow, but at a slower pace over the remainder of the year.
For 2008 as a whole, UNWTO expects international tourism growth to be overall positive.
All sub-regions posted positive results in the first months of the year. Growth was fastest in the Middle East, North-East and South Asia, and Central and South America. North-America is on track for a clearly positive year thanks to the strong inbound travel to the USA, while arrivals to the Caribbean started to rebound well on last year’s stagnant results. Growth was more modest in Europe, with best performances coming from Southern and Mediterranean destinations.
A variety of destination countries all around the globe reported double-digit growth rates in the first three to five months of 2008, amongst which euromic member’s destinations: Baltic States, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, Sweden, Turkey and China.
The current economic imbalances, in particular the rising energy prices, are very likely to influence tourism spending. But specific demand shifts – determined by disposable income, travel budgets and confidence - will vary from country to country, and from region to region, depending on their local economies, labour markets and consumer confidence.
On the whole, though consumer confidence indices show an increasing degree of uncertainty, international tourism has proven to be resilient in similar circumstances in the past and able to cope with various types of shocks, including security threats, geopolitical tensions or natural and man-made crisis.

In May, more than 10 euromic members navigated around the Russian Federation\'s capital, Moscow.
Over three days, teams of two or three members visited more than 50 agencies, introduced their services and shared with the Russian travel professionals highlights of various destinations.
More than 100 guests responded to our invitation to a workshop at an unusual venue, the Romanov Cinema. In this beautiful atmosphere, our guests enjoyed our traditional euromic hospitality.
We would like to thank all the participants for their time, the warm welcome and interest expressed in our association! БОЛЬШОЕ СПАСИБО !
The third annual Incentive Travel Exchange, in partnership with SITE, will be held from June 23 to 25 at THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, euromic is once again hosting the traditional hospitality lounge during this 2 day event.
We look forward to meeting those partners who decide to make the trip to hot, Viva Las Vegas!
Each year, euromic hosts several groups of buyers to IMEX from various markets.
For this year’s event, Joe Lustenberger from euromic North America’s office, led the US hosted buyer group on a fantastic pre-show familiarization trip to Berlin, courtesy of our German member, Compass Tours Incoming/ Top Tours Travel. They arranged a very educational program with the local partners, Hotel Park Inn Berlin – on the historic Alexanderplatz - and her sister property, the Grand Hotel Esplanade.
Though only in the city for a few short days, euromic was able to show the buyers just how much Berlin has to offer. The group enjoyed an unusual city tour, in the form of a Trabi Safari, giving the participants the opportunity to drive through the city in authentic East German manufactured Trabant cars. This was followed by a traditional German lunch at the Brauhaus Lemke. A boat tour on the Spree river showcased the new federal buildings in the centre of town, while a guided walking tour made Berlin’s history, from the Middle Ages to Reunification, come alive. After a celebratory drink under the Glass Dome of the Reichstag we transferred back to the hotel in bicycle taxis (a great option for “green” meetings) to prepare for our farewell dinner. A memorable meal at the Restaurant Aigner put the cap on a perfect example of an incredible incentive program.
IMEX 2008 proved to be another thriving Trade Show and euromic, its members and World Affiliates, were proud to contribute to this successful event.
We would like to thank all the visitors to our booth for your visit and for your interest in our association! Thank you
euromic welcomed two new members last week: Barclay’s Group Travel in Tunisia and Baltic Travel Group (BTG) based in Latvia. These additions have secured euromic’s place as the largest consortium of independent Destination Management Companies (33 DMCs) in Europe and the Mediterranean.
Barclay’s Group Travel, headquartered in Hammamet, was founded in 2002 and has already established a reputation for reliability, creativity and value. Tunisia – famously the location for the first Star Wars film – offers an exceptional landscape, rich in both natural beauty and ancient Roman and Phoenician architecture. The combination of luxury resorts and exciting activities, including Spas, Sand Yachting and tours of the old cities such as Tunis and Kairouan, have made Tunisia popular with special interest tour operators as well as meeting and incentive planners looking for destination that is unusual in all the right ways. “Joining euromic is a great opportunity for us,”said Moufida Ameur, Chief Office of Barclay’s Group Travel. “We are honored to have been accepted by the other members and we look forward to offering our high-quality of service to euromic clients.”
Baltic Travel Group Ltd. (BTG), founded in 2000 in Riga, Latvia, prides itself on client service and fresh ideas above all else. “Becoming part of euromic is likely to help us open our countries to the clients who have never considered Baltic States as a MICE destination, and gives us access to the know-how and experience of the best independent brands in the industry,\" said Vlad Koriagin, President of BTG, which offers full service meeting, incentive, and FIT programs in the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Long held under Soviet rule, these European Union nations contain some of the most cutting-edge destinations in the world, including the three capitals of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius. The Baltic States are a bridge between East and West, linking Russia and Europe together, and enjoy close proximity with Scandinavia. Although the cities show their German, Russian and Swedish influences, the Baltic nations are founded on a unique and ancient culture, all their own, that still exists today. BTG and euromic are delighted to be able to bring this rapidly expanding region to life for any event.
With the addition of these new members, euromic has grown to include member or World Affiliate companies in 33 destinations.

We have all the momentum and reputation that comes with 35 years of leadership. It is safe to say that we are in a position to maintain our competitive stance – continuing to lead the way in the Industry and expand our market-base.”
As part of the anniversary celebrations, EUROMIC’s communication tool received a complete makeover: a new logo and a redesigned website, featuring a new easy to read and navigate interface in order to deliver improved and state of the art assistance to all meeting and incentive professionals. EUROMIC – THE Destination Management Partnership in Europe and the Mediterranean has joined the United Nations’ Global Compact initiative, which stipulates ten principles to promote international standards for companies and organisations in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. In a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, EUROMIC’s President, Mr. Giancarlo Carrera has given an assurance that EUROMIC members and World Affiliates will respect and support the principles.
\"For EUROMIC, the decision to join the UN Global Compact initiative is a very logical step, as the Global Compact principles fully correspond to the association’s business ethics principles”, declared Mr. Giancarlo Carrera. \"EUROMIC is an international association and signing the Global Compact is an important milestone in our responsible approach to our global business and its promotion is vital to the sustainable development of our sector.\"
The initiative, which was launched in 2000 during the tenure of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, encourages companies to develop their businesses with due respect for the environment, the community, and other enterprises, and is a purely voluntary agreement between the UN and organizations concerned with business ethics and corporate responsibility in the new global economy. Meetings and Conventions, a well established industry in Europe, continues its strong pace in 2007 with all indicators showing increase in numbers and profits. Europe leads the way in the meetings and conventions industry, with Western Europe still receiving the biggest piece of the pie, but a booming Eastern Europe is starting to make a strong impression.
While traditional European meetings destinations such as Germany, France, Spain, United Kingdom and Austria have remained at the top for the first half of 2007, strong infrastructure development well underway in Eastern Countries, such as Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and especially Russia, promise to raise competitiveness in the near future. All are EUROMIC’s destinations.
Demand for meetings in Europe surged during 2006, marking a very good year for the industry not only in numbers but also in high profile meetings as many international organizations and companies chose to hold their meeting in Europe. Industry leaders suggest that this segment will continue its upward course with 2007 predictions showing already positive results.
However, recent statistics from travel management companies show that higher hotel, air and car rental prices combined with tighter availability are going to top the list with clients to be still risk averse and will book late.
EUROMIC also had the privilege of once again participating in IMEX\'s Hosted Buyer Program. Through the program, we were able to sponsor a select group of 10 participants from all across the United States to take part in the show. Blaguss Travel International is pleased to introduce its new umbrella brand, Blaguss event.pro. The brand is comprised of Blaguss’s three subsidiary DMC and PCO companies: admicos. Congress Incentive Ltd (in Austria), Blaguss Travel Ltd. (in Hungary) and PDM-Blaguss (in the Czech Republic), each of which is a member of EUROMIC. This unified brand reflects the Blaguss philosophy of concentrating the experience and expertise of its valuable staff to enhance the quality and variety of their services.
The new brand will be connected to a significant reorganization of the companies’ structure and behaviour. By creating supra-regional divisions to handle the Destination Management and the Professional Conference Organization departments of all the Blaguss subsidiaries, Blaguss event.pro will offer enhanced service for multinational operations in Central Europe, as well as the ability for clients to request structured proposals and to experience the power of logistical planning that transcends borders. The new image promised by the Blaguss event.pro brand has already begun taking shape and by spring of 2007, the Blaguss DMC and PCO companies will have a new logo, a new corporate design and a new website, as well as common presentation tools.
These are only first steps toward achieving a new level of quality service, but thanks to the hard work of everyone at the company, Blaguss event.pro can bring more power to your business than ever before.

Conceptours, our member in Greece, hosted the EUROMIC Annual General Meeting 2007 at the magnificent Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens.
The membership unanimously voted into the Association a new member in Spain: Spanish Heritage. The Spanish Heritage Group has been operating its DMC for 15 years and has offices in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Costa del Sol. A combination of intense professionalism, experienced buying power, and most of all, a deep love for the country allows Spanish Heritage to conjure up a “Different Spain” for their clients. “We are delighted to have been admitted to such a prestigious group of DMC’s, since we share the same service philosophy with all the existing members ... At the same time, it is a challenge, since we have to maintain a very high standard of services throughout, and we are ready to meet it,” states Jose Aixut, Vice President Marketing and Sales of Spanish Heritage.
Also at the Athens Meeting, EUROMIC members voted to admit Nature Style SA, based in the port city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, as the fifth member to the EUROMIC World Affiliates program. Nature Style SA is one of the premier DMC’s in the Republic of Argentine, which has become one of today’s most popular destinations due to its unique fusion of city, civilization and natural beauty. Whether you prefer a program based around luxury or sport and adventure, Argentina is great place for meetings and incentives. President/Owner of Nature Style SA, Mr. Juan Carlos Rua commented that, “Argentina is a fantastic country with uncountable possibilities to be explored, and now as a EUROMIC selected destination it expands its potential to new horizons. As a fully bonded and very experienced DMC, we can help develop the best alternatives for the perfect program.”
Through our efforts over the years to provide the ultimate in client satisfaction, EUROMIC has earned its fair share of good karma. It is therefore our pleasure to welcome our new member, Karma House, based in Amman.

That’s not news to most of us! We’ve felt this challenge for some time now. Planners must provide exciting venues, memorable themes and engaging Incentive Programs in a very short time.
At the end of September a large EUROMIC delegation will be among the 6.000 suppliers exhibiting at the world’s largest collection of ideas: The Motivation Show, Chicago.
