Vienna, a Smart City!

May 2014

Each year the international consulting firm Mercer does a survey to evaluate the quality of living in 223 cities around the world. Once again in 2013, Vienna came out on top in the study as the world's most livable city for the fifth time in a row.

Numerous international organizations and global companies have chosen Vienna as a city for their headquarters: UN, UNIDO, IAEO and UNHCR.

Over 170,000 students at nine universities also make Vienna a city of knowledge.  With the construction of the new campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration to a "green building" concept, a unique campus has been created the offers students and teaching staff optimal surroundings for education and research.

The city's transport infrastructure has become increasingly efficient in recent years as a result of a series of special measures. The new Vienna Central Station is one of the biggest construction projects in Europe and is being developed into an international transport node and the most important hub in the trans-European train network.

If you are looking to have a healthy and sustainable holiday, Vienna is the place to come. Everything can be had here, from ecological body care to fair fashion to natural food shops. The city of Vienna is one of the largest organic farmers in Austria…Over 860 hectares of organic growing land are cultivated on three city farms.

Our water is our treasure. Vienna can be proud of its tap water. After all, the city is supplied with 400,000 m3 of fresh spring water daily from two mountain spring pipelines from the areas around Schneeberg, Rax, Schnealpe and Hochchwab.  And this water, on his way to the city, flows through hydroelectric power stations, which generates 65 million kilowatt hours of power, or enough for a small town. Vienna is the first city in the world to place the "White Gold" under protection of the constitution.

The Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve, the Lainz Game Preserve and the Lobau-part of the Donau Auen National Park offer a unique habitat for many animals and plants. Yet the green city center, numerous communal gardens, landscaped house walls and roof terraces all well as around 27,000 allotments also contribute to Vienna's impressive array of species (135 protected species of butterfly, 320 nesting sites for kestrels, 20 species of bat, 200 beavers in the Lobau or 19 species of fish in the Old Danube). In addition, around 600 beekeepers are active in the city (also on the roofs of the Vienna State Opera and Burgtheater). The Schönbrunn Zoo, the oldest zoo in the world, is concerned with humane animal keeping. And the Schönbrunn Palmen House contains an example of the "Wollemianobilis", one of the rarest and oldest species of tree in the world, with a history going back 200 million years. Vienna is therefore in possession of the oldest example in Europe.
