Sustainable Tourism in Austria...

March 2015

In Austria, environmental awareness has a long tradition and is deeply rooted in the national consciousness. So, when sustainability and eco-awareness started to become increasingly popular and important in tourism, Austria did not immediately jump on the bandwagon of advertising sustainable tourism initiatives. No one felt compelled to advertise something, which had been normal for so long.

Eco-tourism in other countries can be quite pricey, but Austria has a vast range of different places –affordable to luxurious– for the environmentally conscious traveller to stay in. The Austrian Eco-label (“Österreichisches Umweltzeichen”) can serve as a good indicator when choosing a place to stay. It has been awarded to hundreds of accommodations (large hotels to small guesthouses) and restaurants in the country. The label focuses on such things as efficient waste and energy management, the use of seasonal, locally sourced, and organic food, sustainable materials in the bedrooms, and also on the use of environmentally friendly cleaning materials. The range of accommodations with this label goes from large hotel chains in cities to remote small guesthouses in the countryside – whatever it is you are looking for, you will find it here!

Another great plus for the environmentally conscious traveller is the fact that Austria’s public transportation network is very extensive; you do not need a car to get to know our beautiful country. Combining trains and busses you can reach almost every corner of Austria and meet some locals on the way. You could also enjoy Austria’s breath-taking scenery from a boat. Most cruise along the river Danube, but a number of companies also frequent other Austrian rivers and even lakes.

If you like to experience nature yourself, Austria is also the right place to come to. There is a number of National Parks throughout Austria.
In Austria’s east you will find the Nationalpark Neusiedler See – Seewinkel with its beautiful meadows, salt ponds, and an impressive variety of animal species (e.g. about 340 different bird species).
Not too far away is the Donauauen Nationalpark: this last remaining major wetland in Central Europe extends from within the city border of Vienna all the way to the Slovakian border. It is ideal, if you want to get to know Vienna and combine the trip with some nature exploration.
In the heart of Austria, right in the Alps, lies the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern, with more than a hundred peaks over 3,000 meters high and an impressive alpine flora and fauna. Almost all of the parks offer guided tours and extensive information materials, and many have accommodation available within the park or in their proximity.

These are only a few but no matter what your interest –active pursuits, relaxation, nature exploration– everything is possible in Austria.

Blaguss Destination Management will be happy to help you plan your eco-friendly vacation in Austria!
