BLAGUSS DMC

A Hollywood-style vacation in Austria...

September 2015

Let us take you on a cinematic tour of Austria:

In 1949, just a few years after the end of World War II, Vienna became the main location for the famous Carol Reed movie “The Third Man”. The mysterious plot is emphasised by the dark and gloomy atmosphere that loomed over Vienna after the war. The movie features famous landmarks like the Giant Ferris Wheel and the Palais Pallavicini. However, one of the most famous scenes was shot underground, in the sewer system of Vienna. Today you can follow Harry Lime’s footsteps (famously played by Orson Welles) in guided thematic tours through the sewer system, where you will learn lots of interesting trivia about the movie shoot.

Coming out of the post-war gloom, and travelling a bit further to the West, we are now in the year 1965 in beautiful green and lush Salzburg. “The Sound of Music, the famous musical about the Von Trapp family starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, was shot in and around Salzburg in the most stunning locations. After shooting indoor scenes in studios in Los Angeles, USA, the company flew out to Salzburg to shoot at Mondsee Abbey (wedding scene), the Felsenreitschule (last concert), Nonnberg Abbey, Mirabell Palace Gardens (Do Re Mi), Residence Fountain, and various street locations throughout the Altstadt (Old Town) area of the city. The lakeside terrace scenes were all shot at Castle Leopoldskron. So, if you have seen the movie and are a fan of it, Salzburg and its surroundings are a must. You will recognize many familiar views. It might even inspire you to sing a little bit “Doe, a deer, a female deer…”

In 1995, a young Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy gave us a ton of ideas for a romantic night in Vienna in the movie “Before Sunrise”. The characters Jesse and Céline have only one night together and they make the most of it. They explore the tiny streets of Spittelberg, a little quarter full of baroque houses and nice restaurants, they share a kiss on the Giant Ferris wheel, have meaningful conversations at the Albertina, are gifted a poem while walking down the Danube canal, and they even find time to sit in a traditional Viennese café. Walk in the footsteps of Jesse and Céline and let the city’s romantic atmosphere inspire you.

But, maybe you are more of an action movie fan. The 2008 James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace” starring Daniel Craig features the famous floating opera stage at Bregenz. The scene where James Bond stalks the villains during a performance of the opera Tosca required 1500 extras. This stage is open every summer and definitely worth a visit. Also, James Bond seems to enjoy Austria a lot, “The Living Daylights” (1987) starring Timothy Dalton was also shot partly in Vienna, and Daniel Craig’s James Bond is returning to Austria in “Spectre” (release in October 2015) and will feature impressive landscapes from the Austrian Alps. These you can enjoy during a skiing vacation in winter or a hiking vacation in summer.

And, finally, if you went to cinema this summer to see Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation”, you saw Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg chasing villains around in the beautiful State Opera in Vienna. You too can enjoy an evening at this opera and look behind the scenes with a guided tour.

So, why don’t you come to Austria and find out for yourself what it is about this country that keeps attracting Hollywood?

We will be happy to assist you and tailor a Hollywood-like incentive programme or vacation according to your needs and wishes.
