2008: Vienna is on the ball...

2008: Vienna is on the ball

During June of 2008, football will reign supreme in Vienna. On June 29th, 2008 the new European Football Champion will be crowned in Vienna. Starting on June 8th, six games of the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), EURO 2008 will be played in Vienna, and 24 additional games will be played in the other seven hosting cities in Switzerland and Austria. The European Football Championship is the third-largest sports event worldwide, surpassed only by the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup. As the hosting city for seven games, Vienna will be the center of attention for the world’s football enthusiasts during EURO 2008.

Where the Decisive Goals are scored: Ernst Happel Stadium
Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna’s Prater will be refurbished and equipped with state-of-the-art technical equipment. Even before the improvements, UEFA had already given the stadium a five-star rating.

When Football Takes a Break
During the days when the teams and their fans take a break from football, Vienna offers its guests various opportunities to fully enjoy their time in the city.

The Stadium and its surroundings
Ernst Happel Stadium is located in Vienna’s Prater, an enormous recreation area within the city limits; it used to be an imperial hunting ground in the meadows next to the Danube. The Prater contains forests and grasslands and the so-called Wurstelprater – a permanent amusement park with the well-known Riesenrad (Giant Ferris Wheel).

Eating, Drinking, Partying
Football fans will lack for nothing during the EURO 2008. And most certainly, nobody will get hungry or thirsty: There are 6,500 restaurants, 800 coffee houses, and 111 wine taverns (Wiener Heuriger) where vintners serve their own wine, often accompanied by live music.

Danube Island is in close proximity to the Prater and the Stadium. On the weekend of June 13-15 – when no EURO 2008 football games are played in Vienna – the Danube Island will host Europe’s biggest open-air party, the Danube Island Festival. On these three days, visitors can enjoy performances of dozens of musicians from all over Europe free of charge. Numerous stands with food and drinks will serve the nearly three million visitors from all over the world.

Vienna is also the ideal city to find rest and relaxation. Almost 50 % of the area is taken up by parks, gardens and woods. Football fans who prefer to take it easy between games, will find plenty of opportunities to do so. The Museum Quartier and the Danube Island are perfect spots to relax, while Marialhilfer Strasse, Vienna’s biggest shopping street, offers shopping during the day, along with the many trendy boutiques.
During EURO 2008, the Rathausplatz, all the way down the Ring Boulevard to Heldenplatz, turns into the Fan Zone of Europe for all soccer fans; it covers an area of 100,000 square meters and has a total length of 1.2 kilometers. Here, up to 100,000 fans can follow all 31 Euro games on nine giant broadcast screens or enjoy the entertainment program.

The Ring Boulevard will be closed for traffic during the entire duration of the championship tournament. Streetcar lines will also be diverted. The entire area, like a mega-soccer lounge, will be freely accessible. But with so many people celebrating, you should secure your spot early and be there on time. One tip: The fan zone is best reached by underground lines as well as with many busses and streetcar lines. The entertainment program is being worked out and should be published in the fall of 2007. Four additional public viewing locations are planned in Vienna.
