Riga Opera Festival - Viva Puccini! (05-18/06/2015)

For 18 years, the Riga Opera Festival has become a valuable tradition awaited by culture aficionados in Latvia and foreign viewers alike. 2015's festival (June 5-18) will be the first of these events dedicated to one composer only – to musical genius and master of Italian verismo, Giacomo Puccini.

The Festival will introduce flamboyant new productions of operas by Puccini – from the tragic story of a wayward woman Manon Lescaut to the first of Puccini’s opuses, Le Villi, a choreographic tale about broken hearts and spirits. The LNO curtain will rise for several operas favored by the public as well as by critics – the humorous Gianni Schicchi, heart-felt La Bohème, oriental Madame Butterfly and dramatically richly intense Tosca. The most beautiful of Puccini’s opera arias will be heard in a Gala Concert.

The brightest stars of the Latvian and international opera stage are among the soloists of festival, including Maija Kovalevska, Liene Kinca, Egils Silins, Hiromi Omura, Dmytro Popov, Murat Karahan, Eric Fennell, Kosma Ranuer and others.

Energy Discovery Centre opens in June

The Energy Discovery Centre has been undergoing an extensive overhaul, but the renovation works are coming to an end and new exhibits are being placed inside. The discovery centre will open in Tallinn on June 13, 2015.

Energy Discovery Centre is located inside a historical power station building. Kertu Saks, the director of the discovery centre, says that the structure located in the Põhja-Tallinn district will be given a historical look in the style of the 1930’s. In addition to the fascinating exhibition, one of the oldest power station buildings in Estonia will surely be an attraction in itself.

“The building has waited 73 years to regain the appearance it had before the last war. Next to the TV Tower and Seaplane harbour, the opening of Energy Discovery Centre in Tallinn will definitely be one of the summer highlights for both Estonian families and families visiting as tourists,” remarks Kertu Saks.

The museum will be the home to over 130 new interactive “hands-on” science exhibits. The centre, housed inside a unique industrial heritage site, is mainly focused on natural, technical and physical sciences.

A 10 meter wide dome has been built for the planetarium, which will showcase astronomy and space projects of Estonian scientists. An island of lightning is being set up in the main hall, which will collect all exhibits specializing in making lightning visible. The sound exhibition will allow visitors to see and feel sounds.

The family centre, which is being renovated with support from Enterprise Estonia and Eesti Energia, will have over 3000 square meters of space. The discovery centre will open seven permanent exhibitions in fields such as energy, classical physics, sound and optics. Temporary exhibitions will also be housed, the first of which will be about geometry and mathematics. The centre will also open a birthday room, a teachers’ room, physics classroom and a seminar venue.

The City Powered Festival (28-30/08/2015)

Loftas Fest – the only urban city festival in Lithuania and the Baltics, is the perfect getaway for those in constant search of novelty and inspiration. Foreign guests have called it a "best kept secret".

This unique annual urban music and arts festival features three days of pop-up galleries in the industrial environment, urban yards, 3-5 indoor and open-air stages, and open-air games. Loftas Fest cares about sustainability, ecology, music and art trends and is comfortable to reach because it is located in the city.

The festival is targeted to educated audiences of all ages who want to hear the next best thing - alternative pop, electro/base, techno, dubstep music bands from Lithuania and abroad as well as to enjoy visual artifacts. Every year Loftas Fest is trying not only to bring the most up-to-date music but also offer many varieties of entertainment and art.

The location of Loftas Fest is an ideal place for multimedia action, audiovisual performances, special screenings, mapping etc. as it takes place within Loftas itself and  the surrounding yard and smaller lofts around.

Loftas Fest is a perfect opportunity to experience a city inspired festival vibe. For this festival you won‘t have to bother about tents, sleeping bags or how far from the city does the action take place. This time everything is near, in the heart of Vilnius. Loftas Fest is eco-friendly. As it's in the centre of Vilnius, one may walk, ride a bike or skate to the festival. Public transport is also optional.
