Scaling the Heights...

April 2013

While every opening ceremony has elements that weave their way into Olympic lore, the Beijing Olympic Games opening with the “airborne runner” being one, the Bird’s Nest is arguably one of the most iconic sporting structures ever built and certainly up there with the world’s most recognizable buildings.

The authorities in Beijing have decided to take a page out the books of the Sydney, ironically the city that beat it for the games in 2000, in allowing visitors to walk on one of its most iconic structures. In Sydney, the bridge walk has created huge interest among travelers and soon in Beijing guests will be able to walk on the roof of the Bird’s Nest.

The walk includes a section of the roof that has been replaced with glass, so that walkers can see the stadium below their feet.

So when you’re next in Beijing, as well as visiting such ancient wonders as the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China and the Summer Palace, be sure to take the time to walk on the roof of this modern icon as well - just another amazing experience in Beijing!
