Beijing 2022!

January 2018

Wall-to-Wall program, Beijing

2022 will be a first not just for China, but for the history of the Olympics. It will be the first time that a city has hosted both the Summer and the Winter Olympics and only the second time that a national Capitol has hosted the Winter Olympics. As with the 2008 Summer Games, Beijing is setting the stage for another GREAT GAMES.

The emblems of the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games were unveiled on December 15, 2017 and are respectively named Winter Dream and Flying High. The mascots will be chosen from a nationwide competition and presented to the world in 2018. Their creators will become National heroes overnight. But there is more to an Olympics than just fanfare and while the Mascots are often the face of the games, the success comes down to so many other factors.

The most important being the Ski and Snow fields. Very few would think of Beijing when they think of winter sports, but just talk to a few local skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts and they will say that their hidden secret is now out. Nanshan Ski Village and HaiBei International Ski Resort have been a domestic ski haven for decades. And when you think about the history of Beijing, it is not so "far-fetched". Beijing was selected to be the capital over 800 years ago during the Jin Dynasty. It was already a major trading centre and it's elevation as imperial capital had many factors.

Feng Shui. To have mountains to the North and Water to the South bodes well for Feng Shui, and Beijing has both. The mountains to the North had a very different but even more important purpose. And that was the protection of the Capital from invaders from the North. The Mongol Hordes. Beijing was selected because of these rugged mountains, which crested by the Great Wall made any mass scale attack on the city almost impossible. In addition, Beijing was located close to Tianjin, a major port and still considered one of China's 4 key municipalities. So the mountains have served Beijing in many ways. As part of the cities Feng Shui, as a natural defensive barrier and in 2022 as the cities location for the Winter Games.

While the slopes are currently a 2-3 hour drive from the city, by 2020, these slopes will be connected to Beijing by a bullet train that will take spectators from downtown to the slopes in comfort in less than an hour. Thus allowing visitors to enjoy all the best and most magnificent sites of the city as well as its amazing hotels and restaurant as well as having access to the events. 2 of the Summer Olympic Venues will be converted in the Ice Skating and Curling events venues, so the iconic Olympic Park will again be visited by thousands of foreign guests.

The 3 clusters of event venues are a combination of both existing and new venues with capacities to truly give both experienced and junior winter Olympic enthusiasts opportunities to enjoy the events. The Bird is Nest will be re-visited for the Opening and Closing ceremonies, and whomever is the choreographer of these events will have very big shoes to fill.

One of the great advantages of the venues for the 2022 Olympics is that there are already several hotels and resorts complete and on site, allowing local and international ski enthusiasts to test the slopes and of course there are many more in the pipeline.

Beijing's hospitality, efficiency and capability to handle a major international event was highlighted in 2008. In fact it set a benchmark for future games. The Winter Games will be no different. The Chinese people and the in particular the local population of Beijing take great pride in their city and what they can accomplish. Guests can rest assured of a safe, secure, friendly and enjoyable atmosphere with ample hotels, restaurants and all the amazing nightlife options Beijing has to offer

Last but not least, the Olympics will be serviced by one of the world's great international airports, the Beijing Capital Airport.

So from Destination China and the city of Beijing, we say start planning to visit Beijing in 2022 for a great Winter Olympics. In the meantime, there are amazing opportunities to incorporate the ski and snowboarding fields and facilities into your meeting or incentive programme so that guests can say “I was there” when they are watching the events from comfort of their homes.
