« PAFOS APHRODITE FESTIVAL CYPRUS »

PAFOS:
An Open air Museum! The most picturesque town on the island where history, mythology and culture are much alive even in our days…

APHRODITE:
Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty, emerged from the foams of the Mediterranean waters here in Cyprus a thousand of years ago and spread her beauties and glory all over the Island…

PAFOS APHRODITE FESTIVAL:
This Festival is the main artistic event organized every year at the square of Pafos Castle, a Byzantine fort originally built by the Lusignans in the 13th Century to protect the harbor, dismantled by the Venetians in 1570 and rebuilt by the Ottomans after the capture of the island in the 16th Century.
The festival has been established in 1999 presenting successfully every autumn well known operas, such as Guisepe Verdi’s “Nabucco” or “Aida” by The Bolshoi Theatre, or “Turandot” by Giaccomo Puccini.

This year’s edition presents Puccini’s “TOSCA” performed by ARENA DI VERONA on September 5th, 6th and 7th, 2003.

“THE WINE FESTIVAL- LIMASSOL”

LIMASSOL:
Limassol – “Lemesos” in Greek – stretches along the south coast. It is proud of the spontaneous hospitality of its people, its archaeological sites, its medieval castles, its carnival festivities and its successful wine festival. Limassol is indeed a wine industry center.
Geographer Strabon calls Cyprus “evionos” which means “producer of good wine”. The Olympic God Dionysus, the God of Wine, was a very important mythological figure on the island and in ancient times many celebrations were dedicated to him.

The WINE FESTIVAL:
This Festival has been organized every year since 1961 and offers the opportunity to Cypriots and visitors alike to taste local wines and enjoy themselves.
The most impressive figure at this festival is the giant replica of a Cypriot vine grower in his traditional local costume, the “Vrakas”, inviting visitors with the simple slogan “Drink wine, it gives you life”, which has become the emblem of the festival since 1962.
Limassol Municipality offers free wine to all visitors and wines and Cyprus dishes are available at a large number of stalls. During the festival, a special show is performed every night, with Cyprus traditional dances, theatrical and marionette performances and dances related to the production of the wine.

The Wine Festival is officially opened on September 2nd and will last till September 14th. Join us for a glass of wine, even two, even more if you like…
