A new Island appears in Copenhagen!

June 2006

Copenhagen continues to be at the forefront of urban development in the early 21st century, as whole new districts and facilities blossom and grow – harbor front residential and commercial properties, golf courses less than 5 kilometers from the city center and a completely new radio and television \"city\" are just a few of the ongoing developments.

Of course, this growth is not bypassing the events-tourism and travel industry – in fact, from mid summer 2006 a whole new island will appear in the Copenhagen inner harbor.  The largest of Denmark\'s national hotel chains, the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group, has created an \"artificial island\" in the inner harbor on which a new hotel has been built. Naturally, the hotel has been named \"Copenhagen Island Hotel\"

The architect for this challenging project is Kim Utzon, who has created a building that takes perfect advantage of the location – a light, airy design with 2 wings that are linked by a central tower and which will provide a remarkable addition to the waterfront skyline, less than 2½ kilometers from the main shops.

The hotel is scheduled to open on July 1st 2006 and will have comprehensive facilities – 326 rooms, a restaurant and conference rooms for up to 90 persons. A fitness room, spa and sauna are located on the top floor of the tower, which will allow for inspirational views while working out or relaxing. The hotel will not be classified according to the official Danish Hotel classification, as the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group has stated a preference for allowing the hotel to establish its market position without any pre-emptive decisions having been taken.

First United\'s preliminary evaluation (and expectation) of the hotel, assessed on the basis of current practice in Copenhagen, to be an exceptionally good three star property for which claims to 4 star status would not be difficult to justify.

The opening of Copenhagen Island Hotel will strengthen the Arp-Hansen Hotel Group\'s position as Copenhagen\'s largest hotel group with 1,775 rooms (or almost 17% of the city\'s hotel capacity).
