Copenhagen Update...

July 2008

A new hotel

It seems to be a time when it is all happening in Copenhagen.  The latest development in the city\'s continuing surge that reflects diversity and differentiation is the new hotel, NIMB.  It is the city\'s newest and most exclusive hotel, neighbor to Tivoli Gardens, and it opened on May 1st 2008 with 13 luxury suites (with plans for a further 17 suites to be added gradually). The hotel boasts a brasserie style restaurant and a gourmet, á la carte restaurant, \"Herman\", a bar and vinotheque as well as such unusual features as a delicatessen boutique. The suites range in size from 40m2 to 80m2 and some will have an open hearth fire in the sitting room. The restaurant has already received the highest possible accolades from Danish food critics and exclusivity will be the keyword for the hotel.

A new playhouse

Copenhagen has a new theatre, The Royal Danish Playhouse, with a superb location, right on the waterfront and, naturally, facing the Opera House on the other side of the harbor. Designed by Danish architects Boje Lundgaard and Lene Tranberg, the theatre opened earlier this spring with three stages: the main theatre can seat a maximum of 750 theatergoers in horseshoe shaped galleries, which have been inspired by Italian renaissance theatres. The secondary stage, the \"Gate Stage\", seats 250 spectators and it\'s huge double doors can be opened up to integrate the stage and the quayside outside. Finally, there is a small, intimate theatre – the Studion Stage – with a capacity for 100 persons.  The theatre covers some 20.000m2, which is about half the size of the Opera House.

And, a little further in the future....

Leisure

Copenhagen will get an 18-hole international championship-standard golf course, the Royal Championship Course, during the summer of 2009.  In addition, there will be a 9-hole Royal Open Course, a driving range and a Jack Nicklaus Golf Academy, as well as the obligatory social facilities. The facility will be known as the Royal Golf Center and the design and development of the course has been placed in the hands of three Americans – golf course architect Ron Kirby is responsible for the Championship course and shaper Steve Young will develop the 9 holes Open course. The onsite project coordinator for Ron Kirby is Rodney Cole, who will be working in close liaison with Danish partners.

Pressure?

The Copenhagen Congress Center, Bella Center, and the City of Copenhagen are in serious and intense negotiations to establish the basis for the construction of a multi-functional arena, the \"Copenhagen Dome\" that will be able to house indoor sports events, cultural activities, such as concerts and other interactive live events.  The ambitious goal of the partners is to have the Dome operational by the time the 121st IOC Session and the XIII Olympic Congress that opens on October 1st 2009.

Work & Pleasure

The Arp-Hansen Hotel Group and Tivoli Gardens Ltd have entered an agreement to develop a themed Tivoli Hotel and Tivoli Congress Center, close to the Copenhagen waterfront on a site currently owned by the Arp-Hansen Group. Project work has already commenced, under the leadership of the Danish architect, Kim Utzon and the plans include a 400 room hotel and congress facilities that can accommodate 2.500 delegates. Assuming everything proceeds on schedule, the hotel and congress facilities will open in the final quarter of 2010.
