From a Copenhagen Notebook…

March 2003

As far as major congresses and conventions are concerned, 2003 is only an average year for Copenhagen but with an eye for the future, the hotel industry in Copenhagen continues to expand and, in a number of cases, refine available products. The industry expansion includes three new hotels, all of which are scheduled to open in 2003. Urban renewal plays a large part in the new Copenhagen hotel world.

One project is Hotel Skt. Petri, due to open on July 1st 2003. With an excellent central location, next to Copenhagen University and just 5 minutes from major shopping precincts, the hotel is being created in what was once a leading department store.
The hotel will consist out of 270 five star rooms, including 27 suites. All rooms will have bathrooms with separate shower and bathtub as well as separate toilets. They will be decorated with both classic and contemporary Scandinavian design and furnishings. A brasserie restaurant, café and bar will take care of some fundamental needs while there will be conference facilities consisting of a Grand Ballroom and 6 syndicate rooms. The Grand Ballroom will accommodate up to 250 persons, theatre style. The hotel is at a 2 minutes walk from one of the city\'s transportation focal points, from where the Metro will take you to the Bella Center in only 11 minutes.

Although it has only been open for two and a half years, the Hilton Copenhagen Airport Hotel has already announced plans to refine and increase its conference capacity, particularly from a flexibility viewpoint. The structure of conferences and meetings will never be finite – currently there is an ever increasing demand for a relatively high number of syndicate rooms in relation to the total number of delegates, as working groups seem to get smaller (and, perhaps) have a narrower focus. Hilton Copenhagen Airport Hotel will be addressing this trend by creating more syndicate rooms over the next 12 months.

On June 1st 2003, the Danish Arp-Hansen hotel group will open a new, superior 3 star hotel in one of Copenhagen\'s prime locations, right on City Hall Square and 100 meters from Tivoli Gardens. The hotel, named in all simplicity The Square, is yet another excellent example of urban renewal, being established in what was once an office block and will have 192 tastefully decorated and furnished rooms and offers breakfast only. No meeting or banquet facilities are planned but the hotel\'s superb location ensures easy access to a wide variety of venues in the city center.

The Choice Hotel group will be opening Quality Hotel Copenhagen in September 2003. Located some 5 kilometers from Copenhagen\'s City Hall Square and Tivoli Gardens, the hotel will be part of the growing center of the IT industry in Copenhagen (neighbors include Nokia, Philips and Ericsson amongst others) and will be the closest hotel to Copenhagen\'s largest convention and exhibition venue, the Bella Center. It will be characterized by modern Scandinavian design and the vital statistics are: 4 star property with 215 rooms, including 1 suite and 3 junior suites; restaurant, bar and relax facilities; 4 conference rooms from 18 – 112 persons and 3 small syndicate rooms, all with modern A/V equipment.
