Green Mobility...

August 2010

Green Mobility

For the fourth time within a decade, German automotive maker Opel selected Copenhagen as the site for a major event – the Opel ecoFLEX Experience.

On July 22nd – 24th, 20 representatives (qualified from an amazing, original field of nearly 70.000 entrants who participated in the first online qualifying rounds) from as many European countries, contested the final of the event which, as the name implies, was a competition for Green Drivers.

The competition, which took place on July 23rd at the Sturup Raceway just outside of Malmö, required participants to compete at (and complete) various exercises in differing driving situations, such as driving through a typical town traffic situation with the lowest average energy/fuel consumption or completing 8 laps of the race track within a specified time with the lowest energy/fuel consumption or 30 laps of the track within a specified time, while using a minimum of fuel/energy without missing any obstacles and at the same time adhering to the competition regulations.

On the previous day, all contestants were introduced to each other, the entire programme outlined, familiarisation with the car models to be used, instruction and practice sessions took place before returning to Copenhagen.

The event, which received comprehensive media coverage, also included various social activities – a canal transfer by an electrically powered boat (the batteries are charged by windmill generated electricity), a get together dinner at the Ofelia Restaurant in the Royal Playhouse and, of course, an awards dinner which took place at the Royal Yacht Club, which was hired exclusively for the event.

To quote the Opel PR material, “Green Drivers deserve fantastic prizes” and the 3 top drivers each won a car. The overall winner will receive one of the first of Opel’s unique Ampera models to leave the production line in 2011 (until which time he will have an Opel Insignia ecoFLEX model at disposal).
The Opel ecoFLEX Experience was yet another feather in Copenhagen’s environmental cap – the city’s green image providing the ideal backdrop for the event.  And not only was it the fourth time within a decade that Opel held a major event in Copenhagen, it was also the fourth time within a decade that First United were entrusted with the event management – which is surely a statement of trust and the best possible endorsement of our services.

Destination Notes

Tivoli Congress Center
Work at the new, 4000 delegate Tivoli Congress Center in downtown Copenhagen is still very much on schedule.  The congress center is due to open on October 1st 2010 and the largest meeting room will have a capacity of 2500 delegates, seated theatre style. The Tivoli Congress Center is, however, more than just meeting facilities: a year ago, the 510 room Wakeup Copenhagen Hotel opened and just recently, the 400 room Tivoli Hotel opened its doors for the first guests.  Both hotels are integral parts of the Tivoli Congress Center complex.

The Tivoli Hotel has rooms which reflect a selection of famous Tivoli themes, some more so than others, especially the theme rooms and family rooms, while the decor of the business and executive category rooms make a discreet allusion to the Tivoli theme. Amongst the facilities, we can mention a swimming pool, fitness centre, small garden and, of course, restaurant and bar facilities as well as a shuttle bus that will operate between the hotel and Tivoli Gardens during the Tivoli seasons.

World’s best restaurant in Copenhagen
After two years of having looked up at El Bulli and The Fat Duck, Restaurant noma in Copenhagen was voted the “The World’s Best Restaurant” by Restaurant Magazine, when the honours were revealed at the end of April 2010.  Head chef (and co-owner) of the 2 star Michelin restaurant, René Redzepi was quoted as saying “One can add the first Michelin star to the second, multiply the result by 100 and you get some idea of what the award means for noma” and indicated that the restaurant’s goals were the continued widening of the boundaries for innovative cuisine and maintenance of its position at the head of the table.

Little Mermaid in Shanghai
Copenhagen’s world famous landmark, the Little Mermaid, can currently to be seen at Expo 2010 in Shanghai, where she is the tremendously popular focal point of the Danish Pavilion.  While the original enhances Expo 2010, her place has been taken by a video installation, created by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.  Once Expo 2010 has closed, the little Mermaid will make the return trip to her spot in Copenhagen’s harbour, ready to welcome international visitors in 2011.
Will she – in true Hans Christian Andersen style – have a tale or two to tell us?

Ofelia Beach
With the opening of the Royal Playhouse on Copenhagen’s waterfront, the Royal Theatre has been inspired to create an interactive, outdoor drama and activity area on the adjacent, former wharf.  For 2010, for which the summer has been a trial period, the wharf has been converted to provide a downtown beach area for sun worshippers, beach soccer and beach volley aficionados and tournaments, a giant screen for the projection of live sports events and outdoor theatre performances, opera performances and concerts.  The beach project, which was inaugurated in early June, will be dismantled in early September. The extent to which the initiative will become an annual Copenhagen feature is dependent on the approval of and finagling of local development plans, which include a cross harbour footbridge for easy access to the Opera House and a subterranean parking construction for the Royal Playhouse.
Stay tuned for further developments.
