First United
News from Copenhagen...

June 2011

The Big Sky

The title is courtesy of the legendary film director Howard Hawks and novelist A.B. Guthrie, but it is also a very fitting slogan for Copenhagen’s (and Scandinavia’s) newest and largest hotel, the Bella Sky Comwell, which opened on May 16th, 2011.

The hotel is located adjacent to the Bella Center Congress and Exhibition facility, less than 8 kilometres from the centre of Copenhagen. The twin towers of the hotel are rooted in the same foyer area but lean slightly away from each other, creating a striking architectural impression and landmark.

The hotel reflects modern Scandinavian design thinking both inside and out: the clean, uncluttered design of the interior and furnishings has been inspired by the long Scandinavian tradition of using natural materials aesthetically and sustainably. Sustainability has also played an important part in the exterior design – the avoidance of excess heat from outside sources such as the sun and the prevention of interior heat loss are two major factors behind not only the angle of the two towers but also the relationship between the various elements of the facade.

The facts and figures are also quite stunning: 814 rooms on 23 floors (including 1 floor with rooms designed for and reserved exclusively for use by female guests), three restaurants, two bars, spa and wellness facilities and 30 conference rooms, the largest of which can accommodate 336 delegates theatre style. The availability of the newest IT and AV equipment is a matter of course, as is the possibility to be linked to the network in the Bella Center’s conference rooms and exhibition halls.

With the opening of the Bella Sky Comwell Hotel, Copenhagen has added more than 3,100 rooms to the city’s hotel capacity within the last two years – a growth of some 20%!

Action-Packed Arrivals in Copenhagen

Copenhagen’s airport is closer to the city centre than almost any other hub of comparable size and, as most readers will know, the city of Copenhagen has miles and miles of waterfront. Most of Copenhagen’s major hotels are less than one kilometre from the waterfront, which makes transfer activities using waterborne transportation a natural development.

For clients who want to get an event in Copenhagen off to a dynamic start, First United can arrange transfers from the airport to the city centre that incorporate travel by high speed RIB boats (also known as Zodiacs) – a feature which few (if any) other cities can offer. The transfers can be developed to include high speed sightseeing in the Øresund, passing the huge, 40MW offshore wind farm just outside Copenhagen’s harbour before hurtling across the waves towards the city centre. Each boat carries 10 – 12 passengers and transfers can be organised for groups of up to 60 persons. All luggage is of course safely transported to the hotel by land based transportation!

Bocuse d’Or and The World’s 50 Best Restaurants

No newsletter from Denmark would be complete if food and cuisine was not a featured topic and this is no exception. Spring brought once again the highest accolades to Danish chefs, when Rasmus Kofoed from the Geranium Restaurant (located in the city’s eastern district, with superb views of not only the national soccer stadium but also – and even more pleasing to the eye – one of the city’s largest parks) won the 2011 Gold award at the Bocuse d’Or competition. Furthermore, the restaurant boasts a very nice room that can be used for either meetings by day or for private dining in the evening.

The annual rating of the world’s 50 best restaurants by Restaurant Magazine once again confirmed Restaurant Noma in first place with René Redzepi in command of the kitchens.

More Cuisine – to create and enjoy!

Grilleriet (transl. The Grill) is located in eastern Copenhagen on the wharf from where transatlantic steamers once sailed, and as the name suggests, specialises in BBQ menus. However, Grilleriet is much more than a BBQ restaurant, and with about 1000m2 of space available, it offers an ideal facility for teambuilding events. Using  Weber grills in association with Grilleriet, we can create events that include talks on BBQ methods themed to your requirements that focus on team spirit, and can be competitive or not as well as being a lot of fun. And, ultimately, you’ll create food which can be enjoyed as the finale to the event.

Focus on the world we live in

In conjunction with the COP 15 Summit in 2009, the DFDS Canal Tours launched what is believed to be the world’s first electrically powered sightseeing boat. The boat is powered by batteries which are recharged overnight using electricity generated by the offshore wind farm just outside of Copenhagen. The operations (and the economics!) with this boat have been so successful that the operator now has a long term plan in place to phase out the fleet of diesel driven boats in the years ahead.

Sustainable food in a sustainable venue

Julian Møller manages two restaurants in Copenhagen – the National Museum restaurant and Restaurant Toldboden, which he owns.  At both restaurants the cuisine, the kitchen and the facilities are CO2 friendly.
At Toldboden, which is located in a former warehouse on Copenhagen’s harbour front with 360o panoramic views, the renovation work was done using sustainable materials. Much of the furniture is manufactured from recycled materials and the menu places great emphasis on organic products. The restaurant is part of a facility which can accommodate meetings for up to 600 persons or be the backdrop for a wide variety of corporate events – and the food is still sustainable!

Copenhagen even more accessible

On 2nd June 2011, Delta Airlines will re-open a daily connection between Copenhagen and Atlanta (which will complement the airline’s Copenhagen – New York JFK service). The re-opening of this route, which will be operated with Boeing 767-300 equipment with a 216-seat configuration, will provide connections to some 200 other North American destinations.

And, from the eastern hemisphere, on August 1st, Emirates will also add Copenhagen to their list of destinations, with a service to Dubai, initially  using A330-200 equipment with 237 seats, which they plan to replace with the larger B777 in February 2012.
