Valley of the Whales Safari

May 2006

In Wadi Hittan - Looking for a unique Egyptian adventure? One complete with prehistoric marine fossils, local cuisine, folkloric entertainment, and a serene overnight stay amidst ancient sands?

Your journey starts in Cairo, with an 80 km air-conditioned drive to the Oasis of Fayoum.
Guests will travel along the shores of Lake Quarun to the perimeter of Rayan Valley National Park, famous for its miniature waterfalls. This marks the start of the off-road safari, as well as an exploration of magnificent fossilized skeletons of primitive whales, sea shells, and other forms of marine life, from as far back as 40 million years ago, all exposed on the desert floor.
A picnic lunch complete with cold and hot  beverages will be served at a carefully selected location en route, with carpets and low tables set up for the dining area.

Upon arrival at Lake Rayan, guests will be greeted by a folkloric welcome ceremony called a Zaffa, followed by camp orientation. A dinner buffet will be served around a campfire, with entertainment by an Egyptian band and a belly dancer. The overnight stay features a choice of accommodations: a large Bedouin tent with six partitions or a small igloo tent for 1 or 2 people.

After arising from a serene sleep, guests can partake of the breakfast buffet then head out with guide in 4x4 vehicles to explore the desert before returning to Cairo.

Included in the Safari:

  • Transportation from Cairo to Rayan in A/C coach, then via jeep to Wadi Hittan, with extra jeeps for back-up, equipment & staff.
  • Meals: picnic lunch, dinner buffet & breakfast buffet.
  • Beverages: mineral water, soft drinks, tea & coffee, plus beer and wine charged by consumption.
  • Tent and mattresses, plus pillow & blanket rental for Bedouin tents or sleeping bags for igloo tents.
  • Evening entertainment.
  • 4x4 vehicles (such as Jeep Cherokees) for your guided exploration of the desert.
