2014 and Operation Overlord!

July 2013

Holt Paris Welcome Service, the French member of euromic, together with the Great Britain euromic partner, Travel Places, are already busy working on plans and itineraries for groups visiting Normandy in 2014 – the 70th anniversary of the historic Normandy landings between Thursday, 5th June and Monday, 9th June, 2014.

Groups will be arriving principally from Britain, Canada and the USA to pay tribute to the incredible exploit achieved by the forces from these countries, together with their allied partners, to free Europe from the horrors of Nazism.

Ceremonies will be held at the Pointe du Hoc, the cliff face scaled by the rangers, the St Laurent cemetery, with the perfectly aligned graves of over 9000 Americans who gave their lives for freedom, and the Omaha, Sword and Juno beaches as well as the landmarks of the Canadian forces in the area.

Further along the coast visitors can still admire the Mulberry Harbour that had been towed across the English Channel to create the false harbour of Arromanches, the brilliant ‘Churchillian’ idea that served to offload the heavy equipment necessary for the invasion throughout the long period from June to August 1944!

On the cliff overlooking Arromanches they can visit the 360° museum created for the 60th anniversary where a clever panorama shows the Normandy pastures before the invasion bathing in their bucolic calm and the comparable horror of the war scenes!

One of the final ‘musts’ of the visitor is a visit to the Pegasus Bridge and to re-live the exploit of the first British parachutists who were responsible for maintaining control of this important strategic point throughout the early days of the invasion.

Holt Paris and Travel Places have created an attractive two-centre programme, escorted by foremost experts in both Normandy and the D-Day landings of the summer of 1944. This remains the single largest invasion force ever assembled, and the 70th anniversary of Operation Overlord is a fitting occasion to reflect on, commemorate and remember those that took part in this landmark period of 20th century history.
