Annual United European Gastroenterology Week
Paris, Fun Run,
Sunday, October 28th, 2007 (10h00 – 13h00)
300 Participants

Holt Paris, the EUROMIC member for France, was recently asked to show adaptability and to organise a \'mini-marathon\' of 5 kilometres in favour of a charity during the annual gastroenterology conference that took place in Paris in October!

One of those challenges which as a DMC one is asked to undertake and to manage and make it look as if one has done it often.  The chosen area for the race was close to the Paris Conference Centre in the Bois de Boulogne more famous for its other activities such as horse racing, polo matches, France\'s tennis championships Roland Garros and also…its “nocturnal sports”!

Little did Benoit Cavard, our youngest recruit, realise the logistical problems that had to be faced  which included organising that each runner was armed with an electronic chip to record his timing, asking the city of Paris to stop the traffic locally whilst the marathon passed at various points ....organise staffing to hand out water bottles to the gasping runners!    Assuring the presence of the Red Cross in case of any medical problems which might arise despite the fact that all the runners both male and female were themselves doctors -  And many other aspects all in a day\'s work!

The start was given under an inflatable arch bearing the logo of the sponsors with musical accompaniment, announcers and all the real-life atmosphere of a marathon.  The purpose of the Fun Run was attained as a cheque was given to charity thanks to the inscriptions of the 300 participants

The race was preceded by a breakfast at the Pavillon d\'Armenonville where the runners collected their numbers and participation packs and ended there for the prize-giving

One unfortunate participant, a renowned doctor, insisted on joining the race despite having forgotten his sports clothes and ran the run in his city shoes and finished not far from the front but with a fine selection of blisters on his feet!
