COMPASS TOURS INCOMING

The Elbphilharmonie

June 2018

On invitation of restaurant Stortebeker located inside the Elbphilharmonie the Hamburg office of Compass Tours Incoming was invited for a sailing trip during this year's Hamburg Port Anniversary on the Lisa von Lubeck, a replica of a Kraweel, a merchant ship of the Hanseatic League from the 15th century.

We enjoyed a great view from the water to the harbor and the Elbphilharmonie; took a glimpse at the 829th Hamburg Port Anniversary, the world's greatest port festival. Every year more than 300 vessels all in for the occasion, from tall ships to traditional sailing boats, from museum ships and sailing yachts to working boats of the fire services. A beer sommelier served different kinds of Stortebeker beers with a selection of fine delicacies.

For centuries, the Port of Hamburg has shaped the development of the Hanseatic city.Shipyards and docks, terminals and ships from around the world are just as much as part of Hamburg as the Elbe, Alster and Jungfernstieg. The Sandtorkai was opened on 11 August 1866 as the most modern port of its time.

After more than 100 years, HafenCity is now taking its place. Work began in 2003 and so far half of the buildings envisaged in the master plan have been completed. HafenCity, the largest urban development project in Europe, is being built on 157 hectares in the former harbor district. Located directly on the Elbe and the port, a new city district is being created to provide a unique mix of culture and leisure, urban living and working, shopping and dining. With its parks, squares and promenades, the HafenCity offers highly attractive urban spaces.

In the middle of HafenCity, towering above the river is the city's newest landmark, the impressive concert venue Elbphilharmonie. A bold glass structure is rising above the historic Kaispeicher A, a monumental redbrick block at the western tip of HafenCity. An architectural vision has become reality - the Elbphilharmonie concert hall is Hamburg's new cultural landmark. The design by Swiss star architects Herzog & de Meuron combines tradition and modernity just where the Hanseatic city is at its most authentic: directly on the water and in the heart of the city. This is where one of the world's finest concert venues has been built. The Elbphilharmonie opened January 2017 as one of the world's finest concert halls.

Explore the far corners of the globe and return via Hamburg - travel itineraries don't get much better than that. Gateway to the world, beautiful seafaring hub, maritime capital of the north - even the normally reserved locals find it hard to conceal their pride in their home city, its ambience and its cosmopolitan charm.
