Port of Dreams...

March 2008

BallinStadt Emigrant´s World

History comes alive with Port of Dreams - BallinStadt Emigrant\'s World, a brand new tourist attraction in the City of Hamburg which opened in July 2007.
Located on the historical place of the former \"emigrant\'s city\", built by the shipping company Hamburg-Amerika Linie and opened in 1901, visitors experience a truly unique ensemble, offering a new and innovative angle on the transatlantic migration history: BallinStadt.
BallinStadt translates to \"BallinCity\", named after the renowned former General Manager of the Hamburg-Amerika Linie, Albert Ballin, who initiated the erection of the emigrants’ halls. BallinStadt is also referred to as \"Port of Dreams\", a place of vivid emotions and feelings, a place to commemorate the stories and lives of some five million people who emigrated via the port of Hamburg in search of a better life in the New World.

BallinStadt Emigrant\'s World Hamburg offers a unique chance to relive the journeys and experiences of those very migrants on the historical place. The exhibit is located in the only still remaining pavilion of the former emigrants’ city as well as in two additional pavilions, authentically rebuilt in accordance with the original construction plans.
The major focus of the prize-winning concept designed by German-based LeisureWorkGroup is on the motives, hopes, and dreams people shared in the era of the \"Great Migration\". What made these men, women, and children leave their homelands and settle for a new life afar from home? Their multifacetted stories come alive with the help of an innovative edutainment concept, including state-of-the-art technical devices as well as techniques of presentation, all featured on the historical place. Along with this, informative texts are accompanied by audio-visual devices, such as information terminals, as well as a great number of authentic historic artifacts.

Those interested in tracing their ancestor\'s path are welcome to visit the BallinStadt Family Research Center, located in one of the three buildings. Hamburg is home to a comprehensive and truly unique source for ancestral research: the Hamburg passenger lists, covering the period 1850 to 1934. The largest entity of its kind in the world, the lists document the names of some five million persons who departed Hamburg on board emigrant vessels. In addition, visitors also have free online access to the world’s most comprehensive genealogical database, featuring more than 600 million entries.
