Munich has the world’s most successful museum

On September 16th, 2002 one of the world’s largest museums was opened in Munich, devoted to the visual arts of the 20th and 21st century. With a total exhibition space of over 12,000 sq. m., the Pinakothek Modern brings together for the first time four major collections under one roof.

The museum has been a success story right from the start with long line-ups at the entrance door practically every day. At the beginning of November, only seven weeks after the opening of the museum, half a million visitors had visited the museum – a world record.

Designed by architect Stephan Braunfels, the building is remarkable for its open and spacious architecture, a stage for various interconnections that provides visitors again and again with new and surprising insights.

Museum visitors are treated to a presentation of paintings, sculptures, video installations, photographs, drawings, architectural models and design items in a museum of the same grandeur as the Centre Pompidou in Paris or the Tate Modern in London. The supra-disciplinary concept of the Pinakothek Modern reveals the individual collections as inter-related parts of a larger cultural whole, while upholding the entire identity. With rotating interdisciplinary exhibitions and a multi-faceted events program, the Pinakothek Modern will continuously focus on the innumerable links between the various domains of the arts.

Together with the adjacent Old Pinakothek and New Pinakothek collections, the Pinakothek Modern forms a wholly unique museum complex covering art from late medieval times through to the present day including works as diverse as Dürer’s “Self-portrait” and Bruce Naumann’s “World Peace”.

The Pinakothek Modern with its ultra modern and spectacular architecture is an ideal location for special events of up to 300 people. Evening and closing days are already booked out until late spring. Why not plan an incentive/meeting in beautiful Munich with a festive reception/dinner at the Pinakothek Modern?
