100th anniversary for the Deutsches Museum...

June 2003

Last month, the Deutsches Museum in Munich celebrated its 100th anniversary. Founded by the engineer Oskar von Miller in 1903, the Deutsches Museum is now one of the most important museums of science and technology worldwide.
With more than 50,000 square meters of exhibition space and an extensive stock of valuable original technical and scientific exhibits, it is not just one of the largest museums in the world, but also one of the most successful, attracting 1.3 million visitors a year. It conveys the technical and scientific achievements of the last 100 years through fascinating and accessible presentations, set in the context of related social changes.

The official anniversary celebration took place in the Museum’s Aviation Hall on May 10th. Germany’s President Johannes Rau and Bavaria’s Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber were among the 1,100 invited guests.

The next day, on May 11th, a big parade took place, featuring historic vehicles and means of transport from different epochs, leading from the Museum Island, across downtown Munich and ending up at Theresienhöhe. One of the Deutsches Museum’s most important projects for the future is being developed here, in the listed historical buildings of the former Munich exhibition grounds: a brand new museum, featuring all aspects of Land Transport on 13,000 square meters.
The complexity of the subject of mobility will be fully revealed for the first time, illustrated by outstanding historical exhibits. The historical retrospect will be matched by visions of the future: the latest automotive studies, ‘intelligent’ vehicles, alternative power technologies for vehicles and new traffic models. On May 11th, the first of three halls was opened as part of the anniversary celebration.

The Deutsches Museum, located close to the center of Munich, on Museum Island in the lovely Isar River, is an ideal location for all kinds of events, like receptions and gala dinners. A festive evening amongst technical exhibits like old airplanes, locomotives or ships, creates unforgettable memories. The Aviation Hall, for instance, holds up to 1,100 people for receptions and up to 450 for sit down gala dinners. There are other halls with different themes, perfectly fit for the organization of events.

The Deutsches Museum Aviation Branch, located on Germany’s oldest airfield at Oberschleissheim outside Munich, offers the capacity of 600 for receptions and 450 for sit down dinners. In addition it has an outside area, where tents can be set up.

What type of event location the new Land Transport Museum on Theresienhöhe will have to offer is to be seen.
