Munich Airport doubles capacity…

August 2003

Munich Airport doubles capacity by 29 June 2003
The modern \"Gateway to Romantic Europe\" sets new standards
30 minutes transfer time unmatched in Europe

Just three and a half years after the start of construction, Munich Airport\'s new Terminal 2 finally opened its doors on June 29th. At a gala event, 2,500 special guests from all around the world celebrated the grand opening of Europe\'s most modern and convenient airport terminal. Terminal 2 is a unique joint venture between Munich Airport and Lufthansa, and will be used exclusively by the German carrier, the Star Alliance and Lufthansa code-share partners.

As one of the most passenger-friendly airport terminals in the world, it defines new international standards – designed for the ultimate in stress-free travel. The 30-minutes minimum connecting time (MCT) represents a new European record. The latest technology – such as LED displays, wireless LAN, quick check-in automates and super speed baggage sorting facilities – await the passengers. The Terminal 2 architects, Koch & Partner, kept a clear focus on passenger comfort and requirements while developing the layout. A clear-structured terminal concept and a comprehensive guidance system ensure that all passengers using Terminal 2 will get to their flight the fastest way.

T2´s bright and airy architecture features extraordinarily large and attractive lounge facilities as well as a marketplace with more than 110 shops and restaurants. Children can enjoy several Legoland playgrounds and a Lego safari world with animal models. Terminal 2 is the first terminal building worldwide, which has been specifically tailored to the needs of hub traffic.

Due to a fast growing passenger volume since the opening in 1992, Munich Airport managed to become one of the \"Top Ten\" European Airports. With 23.2 million passengers in year 2002 Munich Airport ranks number 9 in Europe. Looking at the current year – Munich Airport registered 9,447,199 passengers from January to May 2003, which is an increase of 7 percent. The average growth in passenger volume at other German airports was around 3.4 percent according to the German Airport Association (ADV). During the summer schedule 2003 around 100 airlines are serving 200 destinations in 60 countries.

The nearby Alps, historical sites and exciting venues as well as modern congress and meeting facilities make Munich and the State of Bavaria an ideal destination for incentives, meetings and congresses.
