True Athens: Beyond the Acropolis...

June 2010

One of Europe’s largest summer festivals, the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, held each year from May to October, is the oldest and most established cultural institution in Greece.  The Festival was established in 1955 in order to promote music, theater and cultural events.

Entering its 55th year this summer, it is a gathering of minds that showcases culture from all over the world.

Apart from the exciting festival, visitors will find that Athens is a city of culture, inspiration and entertainment for everyone. With 148 stages and theatres in the city, there are more opportunities to see a cultural event in Athens than anywhere else in the world.

Events at the festival are staged in Athens at ancient venues, such as the Odeon of Herod Atticus and the Lycabettus Theater, cultural venues such as the Megaron Athens music hall, as well as the ancient theaters of Epidaurus in Peloponnese.

Over the years, the festival has hosted some of the leading stars of theatre, music and dance from across the globe, including Maria Callas, Rostropovich, Pavarotti, Kavakos, Theodorakis, Hadjidakis, Koun, Rondiris, Streller, Nureyev, Fonteyn, Martha Graham, and Alicia Alonso.

This year, the 55th Hellenic Festival takes place from May 14 to September 14, and will feature such well-known and respected international artists as Demis Roussos, Maria Farantouri, Charles Lloyd, Noh Theatre, Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and many others. In addition, workshops on Ancient Drama and art exhibitions have been organized among the other events.
