Re-openingoftheice-rink at City Park in Budapest

After two years of reconstruction, Városligeti Műjégpálya, Europe's largest and most beautiful historical ice park and skating rink, re-opens in November 2011.The ice rink, which lies between Heroes’ Square and Castle Vajdahunyad has almost 150 years of history – since 1926 artificial ice has allowed for skating even at mild conditions. The EU aid reconstruction adapted the latest technologies while also preserving the antique, national monument style and awaits guests for the upcoming skating season. The rink will host many international sport events in the future, including the European Championship of Skating in January 2012 and some Bandy tournaments. The facility also features a new restaurant and a tourist information center to round off services.

 

The Luxury Buddha-Bar Hotel Budapest

The Mellow Mood Group’s first five-star hotel,the luxury Buddha-Bar Hotel Budapest Klotild Palace,will open in February 2012 as the second hotel of the world famous Buddha-Bar brand in Europe.

It is located in the hundred-year-old KlotildPalace at the foot of Elisabeth "Erzsébet" Bridge. This five-star luxury hotel has a unique design and faces one of the main avenues of Budapest. It will contain 102 rooms, including a truly unique collection of suites, the "Buddhatitude" spa concept, a range of exclusive restaurants and bars, conference facilities and a business center.

As a member of the world-famous Buddha-Bar collection, the luxury hotel will contain the first Buddha-Bar restaurant in Budapest, the Siddharta Café, roof top Sky Bar and Lobby Bar. The luxury hotel, with its imposing building and convenient location, are certain to please guests looking for a uniquely luxurious accommodation experience.

 

Larus Restaurant and Event Centre

The Larus Restaurant and Event Centre opened in spring 2011 and is located in Budapest’s 12th District, embedded in an entirely renewed public square surrounded by the MOM Cultural Centre and Gesztenyéskert (Chestnut Grove) near the Novotel Congress hotel and the Budapest Congress & World Trade Center.

Due to its unique size, the event centre can accommodate as many as 500 people seated in rows or 340 people seated around tables in the same room. Its 420 sq m large room can be sectioned out into three parts. It is lit with natural light but it can be blacked out and it has wall-to-wall carpeting. Its walls are completely soundproof and it is equipped with modern technical facilities that satisfy the needs of our time.

The design of the building and its green-belt structuring makes it a perfect venue for conferences, press conferences, gala dinners, product shows, fashion shows, weddings and for trainings of smaller groups. Its unique features make it possible to organize car shows as well.

The Larus Restaurant and Event Centre, together with the MOM Cultural Centre, the Organic Market and a new terrace of a café located in the promenade offers many new possibilities for various organized events. The capacity of theLarus Event Centre is supplemented by the 650-seat theatre hall of MOM Cultural Centre, which has also been recentlyrenovated. They also can be used together with the BudapestCongress & WorldTradeCenter, the largest congress and meeting facility in Hungary.

 

Budapest in competition: World Games 2017

Hungary may be the host of the next International World Games in 2017, after the project received a EUR22.53 million guarantee from the cabinet. Along with the Olympics, the World Games, with its more than 30 non-Olympic sports, is one of the largest and most important international sport events in the world.

Budapest and Gödöllő are competing against Wroclaw (Poland) and Cape Town (South Africa) to host the 2017 Games. The IWGA will officially announce the host city of the World Games 2017 in early spring 2012, with the IWGA General Meeting ratifying the board's recommendation for the host city.

The re-launched Sports Ambassadors Program -thanks to the enthusiastic associations – is proud to present 22 bids. In 17 cases the Committee came to a positive decision (for example: Hungarian Athletics, Water Polo, Rowing, Wrestling, Dragon Boat, Football Association).

Please find below a list of some events that will be organized in Hungary in the following years:

  • August 2013: Dragon Boat World Championship, Szeged, 6,000 competitors, 6,000 visitors
  • September 2013: Adult Wrestling World Championship, Budapest, 800 competitors, 6,000 visitors
  • March 2014: Veterans Indoor Athletics World Championship, Budapest, 4,000 competitors and technicians, 10,000 visitors
  • May 2014: VII Sector Ball European Championship, Budapest, 400 competitors, 10,000 visitors
  • June 2014: European Waterpolo Championship, Budapest, 700 competitors, 65,000 visitors
  • December 2014: Women’s European Handball Championship, 500 competitors, 120,000 visitors

 

Facts and figures

In the first half 2011 Hungary hosted 212 international conferences with more than 56,600 participants. The average number of participants per meeting was 267 people. The average length of a conference was 3.8 days. The majority of conferences were two or three days long (52.8%). The subject of most international conferences were economical (25.9%), followed by medical (25%) and other scientific topics. In the first six months 72.6% of the international conferences were held in Budapest, and more than three quarters of the conference participants (84.2%) arrived from foreign countries. The table below shows the results of previous years.
