Iceland – building a name for itself!

December 2005

The future looks bright at the top of the world!
Iceland – building a name for itself!

Clean, safe and conveniently small, Reykjavík has succeeded in exploiting its strategic location at the gateway to the markets of Europe and North America to good advantage.
As the vibrant capital of Europe’s youngest country, Reykjavík is about to embark on one of its most ambitious projects to date, with the construction of a new concert hall and conference complex designed to secure itself a place among the world’s leading musical venues and conference cities.

Set against a backdrop of mountains, fjords, glaciers and an ocean, overlooking the picturesque East Harbor in the heart of the city center, few such projects anywhere can lay claim to such a stunning scenic location.

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2009, the complex, which will be financed by a mix of state, city and private-sector funding, will include a state-of-the-art 1,800-seats concert hall, a 450-seats rehearsal and recital hall, and a cluster of conference and meeting halls.

Imaginative in concept, flexible in design, the center, which will serve as the home base to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, will cover a total of 23,000m² at a site guaranteed to make it one of Reykjavik’s greatest man-made landmarks, a living statement of the city’s self-belief and a cultural beacon in the North Atlantic.

For over 30 years, Reykjavík has played host to a bi-annual international arts festival, an event which has attracted some of the leading names in music and helped to place the city on the global concert tour map. From Björk to Bernstein, Pulp to Pavarotti, Led Zeppelin to the London Symphony, and scores of the world’s leading artistes reflecting every shade of the musical spectrum have graced the city with their matchless talent.

At the same time, the city has hosted a series of international meetings and conferences, including the International Conference on Women and Democracy 1999, NATO Council of Foreign Ministers 2002, several meetings of the Nordic Council of Ministers, and possibly the most historic of all, the Reagan-Gorbachev summit of 1986.

Having established itself as a leading conference destination ranked as high as 14th on the European circuit, Reykjavík is now set to reinforce its position in this growing market, with the opening of the new custom-built center.

In connection with the opening the center a new 5 star wellness hotel will be built and it will open its doors in Reykjavik to accommodate demanding guests. A hotel that includes a large spa centre, facilities for relaxation, fitness and enjoyment, which form the basis for a very pleasant stay. From the arrival plaza facing the harbor you enter the 6-storeyed fan-shaped lobby opening up to a view of the concert hall and the water plaza.

The new National Conference and Concert center in Reykjavik linked to an international 5 star hotel is however not the only thing on the horizon for visitors to Iceland in the very near future....

Another project including a new 16,000 m² extension is now already being opened in Reykjavik in connection with the local sports hall. This new building contains 5,000 m² exhibition area, several meeting rooms for 80-120 guests in addition to a restaurant and public areas. This new building is capable of accommodating 7-10 thousand people at a concert or similar events. And.... there is much more... Grand Hotel Reykjavik is at this moment starting his extension of the hotel. Two 14 floor towers are being added to the hotel and connected with the already existing building. There will be 212 new rooms added to the already 100 rooms at the hotel together with more meeting facilities and offering a spectacular view over the city of Reykjavik. This new hotel is expected to open its door in March 2007.

One of the most famous Spas in Iceland is the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is now going through extension of its facilities. Dressing rooms and bathing facilities are being renewed and the bathing lagoon will be doubled in size. Connected with these changes, a new restaurant area with the capacity to accommodate up to 250 people in a very interesting setting built right into the lava field, is about to be opened. These additions to the Blue Lagoon are expected to be finalized in spring 2007.

We at Atlantik DMC are looking forward to the future and to be able to offer our clients these and many other fantastic venues and facilities which are on the horizon here in Iceland.
We certainly suggest that you look north for your next adventure and we will be here to organize the experience according to your needs and wishes...
