“Inspired by Iceland’ Campaign...

July 2010

When the now world famous volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, erupted and caused European air traffic to halt for several days, the travel industry in Iceland was devastated. Cancellations flooded in and no new bookings were on the horizon during the eruption, which lasted from 14 April to 24 May.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going

Icelandic travel professionals pleaded for action by the government, which in turn allocated 350 million Icelandic krónur (€ 2,250,000) for a special campaign, and encouraged businesses in the travel industry to match that amount.  The industry responded immediately and pledged an equal amount, raising the total for the campaign up to 700 million krónur (€ 4,500,000). Atlantik DMC was of course among the companies which contributed to this substantial sum.

Mobilizing friends of Iceland

The campaign was focused on maximizing the use of the social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and the campaign website.

These tools were used to help celebrities and the general public from all over the world to tell their stories of visiting Iceland. Such names as Viggo Mortensen, Yoko Ono and Eli Roth recorded stories of how Iceland has inspired them and affected their lives. All in all there are over 300 personal narratives on the campaign‘s website, all telling how Iceland has touched people in one way or another.

The Solidarity of Icelanders – a unique effort

The highlight of the campaign was on June 2nd, when the entire nation of Icelanders was encouraged to dedicate one hour of the working day to send out a video clip, which encouraged people to get inspired by Iceland, to friends, business contacts, and family. The campaign was a fantastic success: over 2 million people all over the world downloaded this video, over 5 million Twitter messages were sent, and the campaign’s Facebook pages gained over 17,000 friends.

Live webcasts from Iceland‘s most precious sites

Another part of the campaign was to set up webcasts from key locations in Iceland,
such as Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area, Reykjavík‘s main square, the Blue Lagoon, and the glacier lagoon. This was also a huge success, and attracted over a 1,000 spectators to watch live webcasts from these locations at the same time.
