Iceland among the Top 10 Emerging Destinations…

May 2011

Iceland has been known by travel professionals as an exciting incentive destination, a country with active volcanoes and a country of pure and clean energy. Iceland has until now not been prominent on many meeting planners’ radars – but that is about to change.

Great Hotels of the World, the sales and marketing alliance for independent luxury hotels, has revealed its top ten predictions for the most popular destinations for meetings and incentive travel during 2011 and beyond.  Iceland is for the first time on this list, in eighth place. The listing is supported by the statement that Iceland offers incomparable setting for incentive trips and also has some great meeting and conference facilities. With the opening of the HARPA conference and concert hall next month, Iceland will undoubtedly become one of the most popular meetings destinations in Europe.

Convention Centre opening in May

HARPA is located at the old harbour in the centre of Reykjavík, overlooking the sea and the mountains beyond.  It boasts 28,000 square meters in total, including a main concert and conference hall seating up to 1,800 guests, a multi-function meeting room seating up to 750 guests, and numerous smaller meeting rooms. HARPA offers outstanding exhibition space with an exceptional panoramic view.

With the combination of HARPA, the variety of excellent hotels, outstanding restaurants and the impressive infrastructure of Reykjavík, it is no wonder that Iceland is rated in the list of top MICE destinations.

Here you can find state-of-the-art conference facilities only half an hour’s drive from exciting back lands where you can try your skills in driving Super 4X4 monster vehicles on mountain tracks. You can also enjoy glacier hiking or black sand safaris just a few hours away from the conference centre. Iceland is a country for all seasons when it comes to conferences, since it can offer activities and excursions for any season of the year, from midnight sun in the summer to northern lights (Aurora Borealis) in the winter.

Flight connections to and from Iceland

Many ask whether the frequency is sufficient for a conference destination?

Iceland enjoys an amazingly high frequency of direct flights which connect Iceland with Europe, the United States and Canada. This frequency is thanks to the fact that Iceland serves as a hub between North America and Europe, and passenger numbers are far beyond the population of Iceland because of flights which serve trans-Atlantic passengers.

Among airlines which fly to Iceland this year are the domestic airlines  Icelandair and Iceland Express, SAS, Delta Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Berlin, Austrian Airlines, Finnair and Transavia

Iceland has never been as popular – why not bring your meeting or incentive to Iceland ahead of the crowd?
