There is more to India than the Taj Mahal...

August 2011

There is more to India than the Taj Mahal...

When one thinks of India they think of the Taj Mahal, our forts and palaces, our tigers and elephants. However, the reality is that India is much, much more than the stereotypical images that one sees. India is not a country, it is a continent. From north to south and east to west, language changes every 50 miles; food habits differ from state to state; religion, practices and beliefs can vary like day and night. India is more like a continent, with wonders at every corner.

In the past year, we at Creative Travel have been developing a wonderful part of the country as an incentive destination – Kerala in the south of India.

Kerala has long been regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the world. With good reason, Kerala is described by National Geographic Traveller as one of the 50 destinations of a lifetime and one of the thirteen paradises in the world.

Kerala is a green strip of land in the southwest corner of Indian peninsula. Kerala is a land of rivers and backwaters. Forty-four rivers criss-cross the state physique along with countless runlets. Another piece de resistance of Kerala is the meandering rivers which criss-cross the state likes blood veins. Besides, water bodies tucked away in thick forests also enhance the amazing beauty of the state.

The world knows Kerala by its well-deserved tagline - “God’s own Country”. A land so pristine, so natural and so green, that no heart can leave untouched.

Unlike a north Indian program packed with touring of forts, palaces and temples, an incentive to Kerala is a very different experience. A Kerala experience is one of enchantment, of tranquillity, of serenity.

In the past year we have done some amazing things in Kerala. Imagine taking a group to experience an actual authentic temple festival in a local village, sharing space with the locals. Stand by majestic elephants decorated in ceremonial finery as you walk in a procession heralding the gods and the blessings on the village.

Imagine leisurely sailing in traditionally styled houseboat along the canals of the famed Kerala backwaters while you enjoy a scrumptious lunch made by the local boat boys. Imagine sitting back on lounge seats over a cold beer as you sail past lush green coconut palm plantations with only the sound of the breeze in your ears.

Imagine taking a group and letting them participate in the largest team sport in the world – the Vallam Kali or snake boat race. The snake boat races of Kerala are magnificent fiestas that brings alive the tranquil backwaters. Usually, a snake boat is manned by four helmsmen, 25 singers and 100-125 oarsmen sitting in pairs who row in unison to the fast rhythm of vanchipattu (song of the boatman). The boats float low in the water and have a long curving stern. Thousands of people crowd the water's edge to cheer the huge black crafts as they slice through the waters to a spectacular finish. The oldest of these events have curious legends and myths attached to their origin. Myths closely linked to the rustic people and their beliefs.

The excitement of the snake boat races has to be experienced to be appreciated. This is a special event we create for groups where after a few demonstration heats, the guests can actually participate in the race. This event makes for a magnificent team activity.

Imagine being able to take over your own small island and do a grand closing dinner in true Kerala style, with dozens of dancers, musicians and artists. Just off the mainland of Kochi sits a small island that is lush green with coconut groves. This is Gundu Island. Uninhabited and tucked away in the luxury of uninterrupted cool breeze from the Arabian Sea, Gundu is surrounded on all sides by the extremely scenic backwaters of Kochi and is majestically placed at a vantage point which is about fifteen minutes by boat from the mainland jetty. On this island we recreate a small traditional and typical Kerala Village décor, complete with thatched huts and much, much more.

Kerala offers a very different Indian experience. In many ways it achieves every objective incentives start out with – to provide the experience of a lifetime, an opportunity for hosts and guests to bond and to give memories that will last a long time.

Kochi (formerly called Cochin) in Kerala is well connected from all over India and also has direct flight connectivity with many destinations in Asia and the Middle East. European groups can very easily connect to Kerala on Emirates, Quatar, Gulf Airways as well as Jet Airways and Air India.
