April 2009

Day 1: Arrival

Arrival at Marrakech airport – Welcome by guides and staff for luggage assistance.
Special welcome by Moroccan girls in traditional outfits throwing rose petals to participants before boarding their coach.
Transfer to the chosen hotel or guest house by 48 seats coach while the guide presents Marrakech and gives some information about the culture and Morocco in general.

Arrival at the chosen venue and traditional folkloric welcome. While a typical band from Marrakech sets the mood, the guests are invited to enjoy a welcome cocktail and local snacks during check-in and luggage distribution in front of the rooms.

Leisure time till dinner.

Evening departure by coach for a welcome dinner in the heart of the Medina of Marrakech at Yacout: definitely one of the best Moroccan tables in the kingdom with a perfect mix combining superb decoration (by Bill Willis), very traditional cuisine (by female cooks) and a perfect, stylish service. A must in Marrakech!

Return to the hotel via the Jmaa L’Fna square, the real heart of the old city and a real feast of street entertainment performed by snakes charmers, monkey trainers, acrobats, musicians, dancers, story and fortune tellers but also by the ambulant small barbecue restaurants. The list of activities taking place in the square is quasi unlimited.

Day 2: Marrakech Discovery

After breakfast, departure by minibuses in small groups to discover Marrakech and its old city area. Each minibus takes 8 pax maximum and a guide with whom they will discover the old city. All groups will have the same visit but not using the same itinerary.
The goal of the morning visit is to “feel” Marrakech and its traditional city organization but also to meet real Moroccan people living in the Medina.
Each group will visit 2 monuments to have a cultural vision of the city:

  • Palais Bahia: real jewel of Moorish architecture from the 19th century full of history and stories about their occupants such as the Sultans, spouses, Harem, concubines, etc.
  • Medersa Ben Youssef: Old Islamic university from the 16th century and still a symbol of knowledge and prestige in the Arabian world.

Between the 2 visits, the group will cross the souks area, visit real handcrafters workshops will experience by themselves the handcraft making of objects: wood, iron, leather and will have the opportunity to ask and discuss directly with the “Maalems” about their work but also their life in the Medina.
During the morning, participants will stop in a Moroccan family house in the Medina and will meet the members of the family, parents and children for a mint tea break discussion about the Moroccan way of life, family, children’s place in the society, position of the women…

End of the morning visit and lunch organized in a very trendy and intimate riad of the Medina: Dar Moha. Ancient house of Pierre Balmain, famous French designer, this riad is now the property of another artist, but in the field of gastronomy, Moha, a very talented chef who proposes a re-viewed Moroccan cuisine, very refined and delicious.

After lunch, continuation of the Marrakech discovery tour, but this time by horses and carriages (2 pax per carriage), to enjoy the external parts of the city, the ramparts, the royal palace with a stop at Les Jardins Majorelle, exotic plants gardens anciently owned by the famous French painter Majorelle and afterwards by Yves St Laurent. Here art and exotic plants melt together in a paradise like mixture. On spot, the group will meet a Moroccan local painter who will present some of his works, explain his way of working and creating, and will ensure a small demonstration. Discussion is always open around a glass of Champaign served in the middle of the gardens.

End of the discovery day and return to the hotel by horse & carriages.
Leisure time till dinner.

Departure by coach to the residential quarter of the Hivernage for an informal dinner at the Jad Mahal. One of the most trendy restaurants, on the fashion and jet-set strip of Marrakech, where they serve a fusion type of kitchen mixing European, Moroccan and Asian influences in the food.  The decoration and the atmosphere are set for a trendy and luxurious entertaining evening.

Return to the hotel by coach and overnight.

Day 3: The High Atlas Mountains

After breakfast, set-up of convoy at the hotel: 11 x 4WD cars with gasoline, ice boxes with mineral water, soft drinks & snacks (chips & cookies) + 2 x 4WD assistance cars with mechanics, guides and staff.

Departure in convoy to the High Atlas Mountains:

  • Marrakech – Toufliht: 50 km – asphalt mountain road (1 hour).
  • Toufliht – Tichka peak – Telouet: 70 km – asphalt mountain road (1 hour & ½ ).

Participants will enjoy driving in the High Atlas Mountains on one of the most beautiful roads of the country, crossing impressive mountains and valleys, as well as little Berber villages where people live very simple and close to the nature.
After the peak of Tichka (2.360m high), the convoy will go on till the village of Telouet, famous for its historical Kasbah and known as the last village accessible by asphalt road before using the off-road mountain drives till the village of Aït Ben Haddou nearby Ouarzazate.

Arrival at noon in Telouet village and Berber style menu lunch served in a Kasbah restaurant in front of the Kasbah: L’Auberge de Telouet, which is a very nice Kasbah style building serving excellent food under tents on a sunny terrace. This is the perfect lunch stop before engaging the off-road section of the trip.

Afternoon: continuation by 4WD on the off-road of Telouet, crossing very impressive landscapes during almost 3 hours, with mountains, canyons, valleys and rivers but also very isolated villages living mainly from what nature offers.

  • Telouet – Ait Ben Haddou : 70 km – off-road (3 hours).
  • Ait Ben Haddou – Oasis of Fint: 20 km – asphalt + 10 km off-road (45 min.).

En route, stop at a Berber family house to meet a real family and discover their way of living in the Moroccan mountains.
Mint tea and traditional break with olive oil offered by the family during the bread tasting.
Continuation of the journey, till the end of the off-road section and arrival at the Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, a very famous historical site from the beginning of the 20th Century, which has featured in famous movies, such as: The Mummy, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven...

A short stop at the Kasbah for refreshments is foreseen and followed by a ride on asphalt road till the city of Ouarzazate.

Evenings Options in the South Ouarzazate Area:

  1. Dar Ahlam Exclusive Venue in the Skoura Palm Grove.
  2. Kasbah of Taourirt Exclusive Monument Venue.
  3. Deluxe Berber Camp at Oasis of Fint.

Day 4: Ourzazate

Wake-up by the sound of a traditional flute for a Berber breakfast.

Departure back to Marrakech via the regular asphalt road crossing the Atlas Mountains stopping by the International Studios (if available) of the city to see the decors, outfits and have an idea of all the movie productions shot in Ouarzazate
Itinerary of the day:

  • Oasis of Fint – Studios: 10 km off-road + 15 km asphalt (45 min.).
  • Studios – Marrakech: 200 km – asphalt road (3 hours & ½).

Mid day arrival at the hotel in Marrakech, quick check-in and settling in the rooms.
Lunch organized in the hotel or in a guest house in Marrakech.

Rest of the afternoon dedicated to leisure and well being organized at the SPA of the hotel or guest houses or in a SPA riad outside the hotel.
The guides remain at disposal to go back in the Medina for eventual visits or shopping.

Evening departure for an informal evening in one of the best and trendiest lounge bar restaurants of the city: Bo & Zim, a very trendy and “Jet set” spirit place of Marrakech, but also one of the best international tables and nicest places in town. This place is renowned for its fusion of different influences, Moroccan of course, but also French and Asian, and which proposes the guests a mix of cuisines, ambiances and deco. Dinner is served inside or in the gardens of the venue by very young and stylish waiters on a background of contemporary music provided by the talented resident DJ.

Return to the hotel by coach.
Overnight at the hotel or the guest house.

Day 5: Marrakech A La Carte

After breakfast, optional activities in Marrakech:

  • Cultural tour in the main gardens of the city: Menara Gardens: huge olive trees fields surrounding a nice big central pool, Majorelle (Yves St Laurent) Gardens, Palm Grove of Marrakech.
  • Horse & Carriage Tour of Marrakech: in 4 seat carriages drawn by horses, orientation tour of the city with its ramparts, new and old city parts.
  • Shopping Tour of new & old city: guided tour in the different modern or traditional quarters of the city.
  • Quad Tour in the Palm Grove: tour in the forest of palm trees from a nice Kasbah outside the city.
  • Camel Ride in the Palm Grove: camel riding in the palm grove surrounding Marrakech from a nice Kasbah outside the town.
  • Light trekking in the High Atlas: ½ day excursion including transportation, trekking with mountain guides & mules. Lunch on spot in a nice Kasbah or at a family Berber house.
  • Cooking Lesson: in a traditional family riad house in the Medina, participants will have the pleasure to meet a real average Moroccan family and will have the opportunity to prepare a Moroccan meal with the members of the family, buying ingredients in the market, preparing each steps and course of the meal.

Evening transfer by horses & carriages to the place of the farewell dinner: Soleiman Palace. One of the most beautiful real old palaces of the city, dating from the 18th Century and transformed in an exclusive venue for events and dinners. The guests are welcomed in luxurious lounges and a fabulous patio in the pure traditional architecture and style for a very refined Moroccan evening.

Day 6: Departure

Buffet breakfast at the hotel.
Check-out and luggage collecting in front of the rooms.
Departure transfer to Marrakech airport by coach.
