Discover The Netherlands in 2013!

February 2013

2013 marks:

  • The 400th anniversary of the Amsterdam Canals, along which there will be exhibitions by modern, and not so modern, artists. Many festivities are planned, just contact us to find out more.
  • The 125th anniversary of the Concert Gebouw Orchestra (that will perform in Russia, Brazil and more this year) will be reflected not only here but around the world as they take to the skies. Several concerts will be seen on giant screens throughout the cities.
  • The 175th anniversary of our renowned zoo, Artis, will certainly be celebrated by more colorful events than ever throughout the year– and doubtless by many more births.
  • The 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. 150 years ago, the Dutch abolished slavery and celebrations will be enhanced by the communities from Suriname and the Dutch Antilles.
  • The 100th anniversary of the Frans Hals Museum. A jubilee exhibition will present 50 key masterpieces.

January 1: The Museum of Modern Art (Stedelijk museum) has recently reopened after a complete renovation and extension.

April 13: After nine years of restoration The Rijksmuseum will reopen, with more than 8000 masterpieces to be seen in 80 halls – but only one Night Watch!!

May 01: The Van Gogh Museum will reopen with an exhibition entitled ‘Van Gogh at Work’. The reopening of the Van Gogh Museum marks the 40th anniversary of the museum and Van Gogh's birth 160 years ago

And a special mentioning that this year will see the celebration of friendship and cooperation that began in the Golden Age and continued when Peter the Great practiced the art of shipwright in Zaandam, and returned with Cornelius Cruys to found what became the Baltic Fleet.

Relations were strengthened in 2011 when President Medvedev met with Minister President Marc Rutte in the Kremlin. Commercial and political ties were strengthened, and football took center stage when two Dutch coaches were appointed to lead and inspire the Russian national teams.

Now is the turn of the University of Groningen to host a study which will take place between 07 and 09 May, 2013. Cultural, scientific and business relationships will be explored based on a long history of ever expanding cooperation. A permanent Netherlands-Russian Centre has been opened in Groningen, and blessed by a Russian Archbishop.

The music of Rostropovich and the exceptional talent of Valerie Gergiev have graced our shores, as has the wonderful Bolshoi Ballet, and recently the crowning glory has seen the opening of the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam, the only satellite in Europe of the most famous museum of the same name in Saint Petersburg. Every six months a new collection is brought in from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

All of this is in addition to the wonders that already exist in Amsterdam and with more new hotels opening up than ever before, what more could anyone want?  Amsterdam truly is the pulsating heart of Europe and an amazing discovery for all.

Latest News: Adding to this year’s celebrations;

On January 28 our Queen Beatrix announced that she will abdicate her throne on April 30, 2013, the Queen's Birthday! So, we have another great event in 2013 to look forward to. For the first time, after three generations of Queens, the Netherlands will be reined by a king, King Willem III. His Argentine wife Maximahas also gained tremendous popularity among the Dutch population.

The coronation will happen in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, and will be an amazing event. Delta Amsterdam proudly took care of the family and friends of the bride during the Royal Wedding in 2002 and received a personal thank you letter from the beautiful couple.

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands is a monarch who won widespread admiration and love during her 33 years on the throne. But at the end of 2013, the House of Orange-Nassau will have ruled the Netherlands for 200 years (since 1813) and this celebration Queen Beatrix prefers to leave for the next generation.

As of 2014, the national monarchist holiday, Queen’s Day, celebrated every April 30 on the birthday of Beatrix’s mother Juliana will now become King’s Day on April 27. Since the 1960s this holiday has grown into a huge outdoor festival bringing hundreds of thousands of orange-clad visitors to Amsterdam.
