Matisse to Malevich...

January 2010

Matisse to Malevich, will be the newest and greatest exhibition at the newly opened Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam.

About 75 paintings from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg have been specially selected for this exhibition. Included are important pieces by Matisse, Picasso, Van Dongen, De Vlaminck, Derain and many more. The Hermitage Amsterdam is the only dedicated, independently managed venue in the West of St Petersburg’s magnificent State Hermitage Museum. The first exhibition, at the Russian Court has drawn 630.000 visitors and will end January 31st 2010. Hermitage Amsterdam draws on the collections of Russia’s museums to offer cultural riches that would otherwise be unavailable in Amsterdam. From March 06 2010 from Matisse to Malevich, Pioneers of modern art can be enjoyed by all. In addition to this fantastic exhibition, the museum has a great restaurant and can also be enjoyed for private rentals and viewing.

Starting September 2010, the exhibition will focus on Alexander the Great and The Road to the East. Alexander of Macedon radically changed history and the political situation in antiquity. Through his conquests, he also pushed the frontiers of Greek culture to far into the East, a process which was later given the name of “Hellenism.” The exhibition covers all the lands Alexander came into contact with on his campaign to conquer the East: Persia, Egypt, Afghanistan, India, up to the borders of Mongolia. This makes it the first exhibition to present Hellenism on such a large scale and as a global process of reciprocal influence between different civilizations and cultures.

So we look forward to welcoming you in Amsterdam, so you can discover this beauty!
