FIRST UNITED Norway

Remember NORWAY – for natural reasons!

April 2013

The town of Ålesund is a great place to explore some of Norway's most famous natural and cultural attractions. It was established as a municipality in 1838 and received town rights in 1848. At the turn of the century, Ålesund had reached new heights of prosperity, only to be reduced to ashes in the devastating fire that took place on January 23rd, 1904. In less than 24 hours some 800 houses were destroyed and 10,000 rendered homeless.

After a period of planning, the town was rebuilt in stone, brick and mortar in Jugenstyle (Art Nouveau), the architectural style of the time. Ålesund's beautiful Art Nouveau architecture is known far and wide. The myriad of turrets, spires and beautiful ornamentation that gives the town its distinctive character are like something from a fairy-tale.
Ålesund has a unique place in Norwegian architectural history. Its international significance is confirmed through participation in a European network of Art Nouveau cities that includes, among others, Glasgow, Nancy, Vienna, Barcelona, Brussels and Riga. The town is very compact and excellent for walking explorations and interaction with Mother Nature.

Deep-sea Fishing with Authentic Old Fishing Boats

Ålesund is enclosed by the sea on all sides, and we have a large number of good fishing spots in a short distance from the city. Our captains will do their very best for you to have a great fishing experience in Ålesund. The boats include equipment needed for fishing.

Sea Cruise to Ona and Ona Lighthouse

Ona is located approximately one hour west of Ålesund. Enjoy an hour cruise through the archipelago before arriving at the island of Ona, originally an old fishery town where the houses tend to cluster together. There are approximately 250 people staying at their summerhouses on Ona during the summer. During the rest of the year this number shrinks to 34. Ona has an exciting and unique history out there in the open water. After a short visit here, the cruise continues to another island – to Finnøy for a seafood buffet feast dinner at the magnificent Finnøy Ocean Inn. This is a picturesque place with an unbeatable dining experience in authentic maritime surroundings!

Day Cruise to the Hjørund & the Word Famous Geiranger Fjord

Hjørundfjord is one of the closest fjords to Ålesund, only one hour away.
These majestic mountains and deep fjords are both spectacular and astonishing. Guests will truly enjoy this breath-taking fjord on a two hour cruise before docking close to the magnificent Union Øye Hotel. Lunch will be served here in nostalgic surroundings. The boat will come in close to the hotel, and guests will just have to take a short walk.
The group is picked up by a private coach for a one hour journey to the world famous Geirangerfjord, now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the mouth of this fjord, board a private sightseeing boat for a two and a half hour cruise.
Geiranger is the crowning glory among Norway's fjord district's pearls of natural beauty. Majestic, snow-covered mountain peaks, beautiful and wild waterfalls, lush, green vegetation and the deep blue waters of the fjord - yes, it really is like something taken from a fairy tale. End back in Aalesund.

Visit to the Atlantic Sea Park Aquarium

Only a few minutes by car from the center of Ålesund, where Breisundet meets the Atlantic Ocean, you can find Atlanterhavsparken, one of the largest saltwater-aquariums in northern Europe.
Here at Tueneset you will find an architectural gem, integrated into the coastal nature between ocean and land, officially opened by the Norwegian King and Queen in 1998. Here, the group can enjoy a diving show in the large fish tank!

Dinner Cruise Ålesund

The group is picked up from the hotel by the privately chartered M/S Keiser Wilhelm for a short transfer cruise to the Devold Knitwear Factory. The first factory customers were fishermen and fishery workers that had to work in the harsh Norwegian coastal climate. Later, the great explorers Nansen, Amundsen and Ellsworth discovered the excellent properties of Devold fabrics. Devold is now the leading company within sports underwear, socks and insulated woollen clothing and is used on expeditions all over the world. Devold has a renowned collection of Norwegian knitwear with traditional patterns.
Here the group will enjoy dinner in the gourmet restaurant of Kølbuda (The Coal House). The house was previously used for storage of coal for the factory production. Today it is one of the cosiest restaurants in Ålesund.

Visit the Art Nouveau Centre of Norway

Jugenstilsenteret is the national centre of Art Nouveau in Norway, and is part of the international Réseau Art Nouveau Network, together with nineteen other Art Nouveau cities. The museum and visitor centre is beautifully situated by the Brodsundet sound in Ålesund, in a historical building that housed the Swan Pharmacy. In 1904 a fire left Ålesund in ashes, and the city was rebuild in Art Nouveau style, locally known as Jugendstil. The rebuilding of Ålesund created one of Europe´s most characteristic towns in Art Nouveau.

Jugendstilsenteret offers a fascinating insight into this Art Nouveau style in Ålesund and internationally, by means of authentic interiors and objects, as well as captivating multimedia programs. The Art Nouveau Centre has several permanent exhibitions and the building itself has some of the finest genuine Art Nouveau interiors in Norway. On the first floor you will find the beautiful dining room of pharmacist J.A.Øwre, which is carefully restored and set for a dinner party. The Swan Pharmacy shop with genuine Art Nouveau interiors forms the entrance of the museum.
