In Hunt for the Northern Lights...

October 2013

A spectacular winter program in the city of Tromsø, known as "theParis of the North" and "the Gateway to the Arctic" will for sure be an unforgettable adventure for your clients!

Daylight hours in January are approximately four hours. Sunrise is at around 10am, sunset at around 2pm. The darkness is definitely a part of the experience and a prerequisite for the famous Northern lights or ‘Aurora Borealis’. To go out hunting for this breathtaking phenomenon of nature is an awe-inspiring sight!

To get an impression of what the Northern Light is all about, view this YouTube video, shot in Tromsø:

Tromsø can offer a "smorgosbord” of arctic experiences, ranging from whale watching safaris, husky dog or reindeer sleighing to snowmobile excursions – all from the doorstep of the town centre hotels.

Whale Safari Cruise

Go out in search of the majestic humpback and orca whales! With a big day cruiser limited to 120 passengers we do a whale safari out in the open sea and look for whales. This boat is usually used up in the Spitsbergen/Svalbard Island to look for polar bears and has three different decks you can use to get the best view to look for whales. Perfect for whale watching!

On our way to see the whales, there's a good chance that we can see both sea eagles and seals. See a video of a whale watching this experience in Tromso here (Click on the photo to start the video, external link)

Reindeer ride with Sámi lunch

Guests will be picked up at the hotel and driven to the Tromsø Arctic Activity Center.
Driving through the Norwegian landscape, you will also see the “alps” of Tromso, called Lyngs. Upon your arrival there, your guide will provide you with warm clothing. Transport by sleds up to where the reindeers are waiting, the guests will go on a calm and amazing reindeer ride and experience the traditional Sami way of transport. While sledding through the Norwegian winter landscape the only thing you will hear is the reindeer bell. It is a truly peaceful experience.

Upon return to the lavvo tent,a traditional warm Sami hot meal is served. The warmth from the bonfire and the warm meal will bring the guests back in time and give them an opportunity to feel and experience how the Sami people lived their lives. The guide will also tell you about the Sami people’s history and way of living.

Accommodation

Tromsø boasts good four-star conference properties, exclusive lodge wilderness hotels and famous nightlife! One of the best properties in town is the Rica Ishavshotel (“Rica Ice Ocean Hotel”).

As far back as a century ago, visitors were surprised to find culture, intellectual life and the current fashions so far north, and the city derived the name Paris of the North. That reputation lives on today and visitors to Tromsø are charmed by the city’s patriotic, loud and obliging residents, by a historical, compact and characteristic city centre, by a live and active cultural life all year round, by the Northern Lights and Polar Nights and by the exciting attractions and excursions on offer!
