The City of Bergen...

October 2010

The city of Bergen is gearing up for an rise in demand due to international conferences by increasing the number of hotel rooms in the city by 20% during the next 2 years.

Bergen is known as the “City Between the Seven Hills” and as “The Gateway to the Fjords”. The city is a former Hanseatic port and the birthplace of the famous composer Edward Grieg. It has unique architecture and Europe’s largest areas of well kept wooden houses still in use. The harbour front fish market is truly world famous and a heaven for salmon lovers! Also, the city has been voted one of the cleanest and tidiest cities in Europe!
As “The Gateway to the Fjords”, the city is the natural starting point for breathtaking fjord explorations. Both the majestic Sognefjord and the charming Hardangerfjord are easily accessible from Bergen on a leisurely day trip. Bergen is the ideal incentive destination, offering an attractive combination of nature, culture and pulsating city life. In the period from May to July, the evenings are light and pleasant. The sun sets at approximately 23.00 but it never gets truly dark! The light nights combined with the fresh air, the lively night life and the historic, picturesque streets, make Bergen one of the most exciting destinations to visit in the summer months!

MICE destination Bergen

Bergen is the perfect back drop for an unusual and memorable meeting, incentive or conference. The compact layout of the city allows for easy walking distanced between all hotels, sights, restaurants and conference centers, making it a logistical heaven for any organizer! The accessibility of the city by air combined with its location close to the famous fjords has made it a popular city for this segment.

However, the challenge in the past and present is the limited number of four and five-star properties which are able to cater for the upscale corporate market segment. The good news is that this is about to change as the city currently has hotel development plans which will increase the number of four-star rooms by some 20 percent by the year 2013.

The Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, built in 1983, has the best location in town - at the world famous Bryggen wharf. The property will undergo a total facelift and increase meeting capacity from 450 to 800 persons. They will also increase room capacity from 273 rooms to 375 rooms. Work is scheduled to be completed in spring 2012.

The Norwegian four-star hotel chain Rica Hotels has just announced their decision to build a new hotel in Bergen with 350 rooms and meeting capacity of 500 persons. A building of 12,000 square meters with twelve floors is in planning. The hotel is scheduled to open in 2013 and no photos are available at this point.

Another four-star hotel chain, First Hotels, is planning a new hotel at the Bergen Airport for completion in 2013 in conjunction with the opening of a new international terminal.
It will have 250 rooms and capacity of 700 persons.

Even more hotels are in the early planning stages, so Bergen will soon become a small city with a big city hotel infrastructure!
