Polish Vodka Tasting 130 meters below ground!

May 2006

Just as France is famous for its champagne, vodka has been Poland’s most important drink for centuries. Produced in a thousand different ways for over a thousand years, this drink holds an important place in Polish tradition.
It is difficult  to imagine Poland without this kind of alcohol, and a visitor coming to Poland should experience at least a small shot of its pleasure.

We therefore suggest an evening in the most extraordinary scenery of the Wieliczka Salt Mine, right outside Krakow – a world class tourist attraction. Over a period of 700 years, many generations of Polish miners created the underground world, exceptional  in its beauty, with the rich interior decoration of chapels – including the most beautiful of Blessed Kinga, the original linings of the galleries and workings, and the underground salt lakes. We can use a few of the 20 excavated chambers on three levels. The deepest accessible level is located 130 meters below ground. The chambers  are decorated with beautiful statues sculpted in salt. What is also important to know: the temperature down there is the same all the year round: + 17-18 degrees Celsius. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is included in the UNESCO list of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

The evening program includes:
-traditional folklore welcome by a folklore group at the mine entrance, followed by a welcome shot of vodka
-lift ride to the first level of the mine
-custom tour of the mine
-vodka tasting ceremony in one of the most beautiful chambers of the mine

During the ceremony, more than ten kinds of the most famous Polish vodkas will be presented to our guests including Chopin white vodka, Wyborowa white vodka, Zubrovka – the Polish bison vodka, Krupnik – honey vodka, Old Oak Vodka, cherry vodka and more. Each station will be labelled with detailed information about the vodkas presented there.  There will also be buffets with typical Polish  snacks to accompany the vodka– famous sausage of various kinds, smoked meats, pickled cucumber and mushroom, bread with lard, herring etc.

During the ceremony a miners brass band will perform for the guests and the master of ceremonies, an English speaking actor, will explain all about the history, production and tradition of drinking this national alcohol of Poland. At the end of the event, a souvenir gift consisting of a special booklet about all the vodkas sampled plus three small bottles of the most famous Polish vodkas will be given to our guests.
