Tri-City – the new MICE Destination in Poland

Gdańsk - fascinating and special city. Indeed, it was at the nearby Westerplatte that the first shots of history’s greatest war were fired in 1939. Later in the late 1970s the city’s Lenin Shipyard saw the birth of the Solidarity Trade Union, which made Lech Wałęsa a household name and began the process of transformation across the entire region.

Gdańsk is just the largest component of the”Tri-City” conurbation consisting of Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot. Sopot is an elegant beach resort of villas and hotels famous for its musical and cultural festivals. The city is proud to have the longest pier in entire Baltic area.Gdańsk is full of valuable architectural monuments like the Long Market – a magnificent street, with Patrician mansions decorated with late Renaissance and Baroque facades, the Main Town Hall, with a figure of King Sigismund Augustus on the top, the Artus Court and finally St. Mary’s Basilica, one of the largest red-brick Gothic churches in Europe.

Just an hour drive from the Tri-City is located Malbork, where the magnificent Gothic castle - the biggest surviving building in such an excellent condition in Central Europe - can be seen. There is another reason to come – the amber – gold of the Baltics. The beauty and abundance of amber jewelry paved them the way to princely and royal courts all around Europe spreading the legend of amber. Contemporary Tri City still maintains its traditional status of the world’s amber capital.

Nowadays Tri-City is transforming into a very modern urban environment and this applies also to the infrastructure for the MICE industry. The new airport terminal has been opened just a few years ago. Tri-City is linked with many European capitals on a daily frequency. Till recently however, there was a lack of a very important component for successful meeting or incentive organizing, namely five star hotels.
This is no longer a problem now. In 2006 Sofitel – overlooking the Gdansk Bay – has been opened in the historical building of former famous Sopot Grand hotel. The hotel has 127 rooms and suites, 6 conference rooms able to accommodate up to 200 pax and a spa.
This year, just next to it, another five star property – Sheraton Sopot – opened its doors for guests in July ( guest rooms only, conference and spa will be opened in March 2009 ). The newest Tri–City five star property has 189 rooms and suites, 11 conference rooms able to accommodate up to 500 pax and a spa.
There will be another 5 star hotel – that one in Gdansk – Radisson SAS, which will be opened in the heart of the historical part of the city at the Long Market in autumn 2009. This hotel will provide around 200 rooms plus a big conference space.
The city has also many interesting venues offering many options for unique and unforgettable events.
Just a few examples:

  1. Dinner in the Artus Court – splendid Renaissance structure in the heart of the Old Town.
  2. Cocktail in the National Museum, where famous “Last Judgment” by Hans Memling is on display.
  3. Knight’s Tournament followed by medieval feast at the Malbork Castle.
  4. Lecture following by meeting with Lech Walesa at the Gdansk Shipyard where the “Solidarity” revolution began.
  5. Conference, meeting or performance in the ultra modern Baltic Philharmonic Hall.
  6. Private organ concert in the famous Oliwa Cathedral.
  7. Exclusive dinners at Villa Uphagena or Pod Lososiem restaurants with its tradition going back over centuries.

These are just examples – full list of options is available at Mazurkas Travel DMC Poland.
