Chopin A La Carte...

November 2009

The name of Frederic Chopin is well known worldwide among classical music lovers. His mazurkas, etudes, polonaises and scherzos have become a test of measure of any pianist’s talent. Stay in Warsaw gives an excellent opportunity to enjoy his music in his native country.  2010 will be a special occasion also for Mazurkas Travel, which celebrates its 20th birthday. On this occasion we have prepared various programs for Chopin’s music lovers – a few examples attached. These are just samples of what we can offer – tailor made programs can be made on request – Chopin A La Carte – indeed. The programs can include any performance of Chopin music like opera, ballet or even an orchestra created with your guests, who after one hour teaching can play some phrases of one of Chopin’s masterpieces, on a wide variety of instruments.

There is also another attraction, newt to already very rich program of Chopin music performances in 2010 - the Chopin Museum in Warsaw reopens as a venue of 21st century, which combines tradition and modernity.

Everybody knows that Frederic Chopin was a great pianist and composer, but not everybody knows that the Chopin Museum in Warsaw when it reopens in 2010 will be simply amazing. Major reorganization and revitalization work is scheduled to end on March 1st, 2010 for the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

Warsaw is getting ready to celebrate this occasion. The newly refurbished museum will be one of the main venues of the International Year of Chopin. The museum is located in an historical Ostrogski Palace from the 18th century situated in the City Center just 200 meters away from the magnificent Royal Route. Italian designers Migliore & Servetto are responsible for the innovative and state of the art exhibition concept. They reassure this will be something exceptional and the most interesting biographical museum in Europe. It will measure 4500 square meters and each out of 4 floors will be dedicated to a different aspect and period in Chopin’s life.
So the cellar will present Chopin as a composer/pianist along with his followers. The Concert room will be there as well. The ground floor will present Żelazowa Wola period, child’s room, Mr. Nicolas Chopin saloon and exhibit Warsaw in the times of Chopin”. The first floor will focus on Parisian life, Nohant and on women in his life. The second and the last floor will be dedicated to Chopin’s European Journeys, his Personality and finally his death.  The museum will be fully interactive and most technically advanced. Each visitor will receive a special token/chip which will be your guide during your individual tour through the exhibition. The token placed in one of the many readers will allow listening to the music, viewing rare manuscripts and listening to the information in many languages. The visitors will hear the noise of a 19th century Parisian street, sounds from the kitchen at Nohant mansion; smell the aroma of Chopin’s favorite violets etc. Beside the rare and precious 800 manuscripts and autographs, visitors will be able to see Chopin’s personal belonging including his clothes, coffee cup, handkerchief, pens and jewelry. The entire museum will sound with Chopin’s music except for the room commemorating his death which will be dark and silent. His post mortal mask will be presented there and a sample of his natural hair.

We are certain that this museum will become an important tourist attraction in Warsaw, a place to visit not only for the music lovers!

A list of events planned on occasion of its magnificent anniversary is attached below, as well as a list of places connected with Chopin’s life.

Chopin sites in Poland

We love Chopin in Poland and everything about him. Every Chopin memorabilia is a national treasure and every place where the great composer stayed is a national shrine.

Zelazowa Wola
Small village located 60 km west from Warsaw in the picturesque Mazovian countryside. This is where on February 22, 1810 Frederic Chopin was born to his French father and Polish mother.  A museum devoted to the great composer is located in the preserved annex of the former manor. The local museum contains copies of the marriage certificate of his parents, Frederic’s birth certificate and baptism, manuscripts, drawings and letters and other memorabilia. Visitors are particularly drawn to the “mother’s room” where the huge bouquet of fresh flowers indicates the place where Chopin was born. In the nearby Brochów there is a gothic, parish church where young Chopin was baptized.

Chopin lived in Warsaw from 1810 to 1830, attended schools, took private piano classes, and gave his first concerts.

Parlor of Chopin’s Family
There is a small museum in the apartment on Krakowskie Przedmiescie 5, where his family lived in 1827-1837.  The interiors were reconstructed in 1960’s according to an original sketch made by Frederic’s schoolmate Antoni Kolberg. There is period furniture and portraits on display along with a valuable XIX piano.

Fryderyk Chopin Museum
Located in baroque Ostrogski Castle high above Tamka Street. It houses the largest collection of Chopiniana in the world grouped in two exhibitions: “Chopin in Warsaw, Paris and Nohant” and “Chopin in the work of sculptors and medalists”.  Of particular interest are his personal belongings like his gold watch, his shirt pins, pencils and also a lock of hair.

Chopin Monument in Lazienki Park
One of Warsaw’s landmarks, which attracts visitors from all over the world, and situated in the Rose Garden of the Royal Park gives a perfect background for live, open air piano concerts in the summer.

Holly Cross Church
One of Warsaw’s prime places of worship located on the Royal Way. Young Frederic Chopin played the organ here. After his death in Paris in accordance with his wishes Chopin’s heart was taken to his beloved homeland. It was placed in the pillar in the main nave and covered by a commemorative plaque.

Duszniki Zdrój
In 1826 Chopin spent his summer vacations in the mountain resort of Duszniki in Southern Poland.
He was 16 then and performed two charity concerts in a building, then called Health Spa, and now Chopin Theatre. Ever since 1946 the International Chopin Festivals are held there annually and a series of the composer’s memorabilia are on display.
