Catherine the Second or the Great?

January 2004

One thing is for sure: everybody in his life has heard at least once about the Russian Empress Catherine II. She was a real character and there are plenty of rumors, gossips and stories about her. The second half of the 18th century was the time of Catherine II – the period of the florescence of the country. While Europe came across with decadence, Russia was on its cultural apogee. It is obvious that during the Soviet time, this was not acclaimed too loudly about the Romanov family.
This year – the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg – the Hermitage museum has renovated following Catherine\'s traditions. The Russian Empress Catherine II founded the third biggest museum of the world under the name of the Hermitage. Her dream was not just the collection of pieces of art; she also wanted to combine different arts under one roof. For instance, the halls of the museum always accommodated plenty of musicians. According to the Empress it was easier to get the idea of a painting under the sounds of the music. Isn\'t that a nice tradition?

Leader Team can suggest an evening visit of the museum for incentive groups, with a 30 minutes concert performed by the State Hermitage Orchestra in the St. George Hall (Large Throne Room) of the Winter Palace (for up to 300 persons). Another nice opportunity to feel the époque of Catherine the Great is to enjoy the classical ballet performance in the Hermitage Theater (BMW Spain had this program in November).

For visitors coming to St. Petersburg in February we suggest to join the international festival “1000 and 1 Concerts” to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the State Hermitage Orchestra.
