Moscow and St. Petersburg are closer to each other...

At the end of December, a high-speed train SAPSAN departed from Moscow for St Petersburg on the first journey of the service. The travel time was 3 hours 45 minutes. Travel times are one hour and fifteen minutes faster than previous trains used for the same route.

Siemens produced the train with the development support of leading Russian rail transport institutes.

To enable the train to travel at speeds of up to 250 km/h between Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russian Railways modernized the infrastructure of this line. The work began in 2006 and was completed in November 2009. During this period, work was carried out to reconstruct the track bed, track superstructure, overhead lines, and traction substations, and high-speed track switches were installed.

Each high-speed SAPSAN train has ten carriages, two of which are first-class and eight are second-class.

Ticket prices vary depending on the day of the week and departure time.

The SAPSAN train has electronic registration.
