Adventures in Serbia!

June 2017

It boasts canyons and crevices, rivers and rapids, beaches, mountain ranges, national parks and nature reserves. Throw in the beautiful spring summer climate - from pleasant spring days to the heady heights of the August sun - and you would be hard pushed to beat it anywhere in Europe.

From canyoning at Tresnjica Gorge, to biking the Danube trail and donkey rides up Tara Mountain, we explore the very best action and adventure activities that Serbia has to offer.

Hiking on Fruska Gora: designated a national park in 1960, Fruska Gora Mountain boasts an extensive network of trails perfect for hiking. And the smattering of monasteries across the landscape make for a pretty impressive backdrop.
If hiking mountainous trails isn't enough exertion for you, then sign up for the marathon that's held in late April every year - there’s a race for everyone, from a 4.4km children’s trail to the 125km ultra extreme marathon.

Canyoning at Tresnjica Gorge: this 6km-long picturesque canyon is one of the best spots in Serbia to try this increasingly popular extreme sport. Combining climbing, abseiling, swimming, jumping and sliding, there are few more adventurous ways to explore the Serbian Mountainside.

White water rafting: another extreme sport, particularly so in spring when the snow-melted rivers are at their fullest and most challenging, white water rafting hot spots include the Drina, Ibar and Lim rivers.

Water sports: if lake-top water sports are more appealing than the river rapids, make like a Belgrade local and head out of town to the summer resort of Ada Ciganlija.
All the usual water sports are on offer, along with bike trails around the lake, zip line across Ada Lake, and great sunbathing for those in need of a little down time.

Biking: see the Danube via pedal power on the Danube cycle trail, which is 1,800 miles long and passes through 10 countries on its journey from Germany to the Black Sea. 365 of those miles are in Serbia, so you'll need a lot of that pedal power to see it all. It's worth it though.

Mountaineering: Mount Tara is a must visit, thanks to its seemingly endless offerings. It's undeniably beautiful, has forests, canyons and ravines, bears, and, according to legend, even a resident Slavic god, Tar. The aptly named Tepih livada (carpet meadow) is a fun experience - it really does feel as though your feet are sinking into a plush pile carpet as you walk across it.
