Another reason to visit Barcelona: The Güell Palace reopening

Located in the centre of Barcelona, this work of the master architect Antoni Gaudí just reopened this year after several years’ restoration.

The simplicity of both the front and back façades of this “modernist” building contrasts with the magnificence of the exquisitely decorated interior. Visitors will be surprised by the luxury of detail that reflect the taste and originality of the architect.

The interior revolves around a spectacular central salon crowned by a parabolic dome which projects above the roof terrace in a cone and is perforated with small circles, which, in the light of day make it look like a planetarium.

The terrace with its conical chimneys and vents, like fir trees, are probably the prototypes of the later warrior chimneys on the roof of the Pedrera.

It was indeed for this building that Gaudífirst used the “trencadis” (broken ceramic), decoration he would later use on all kinds of surfaces and which was widely used during the Modernist period. This is another “must see” to add to the wide list of interesting sites for your next visit to Barcelona!

TriBall: Madrid’s newest fashion neighbourhood

TriBall, which used to be associated with drugs and prostitutes, is one of the new hot spots of the capital of our country. Only three years ago, a handful of local entrepreneurs and merchants realized that the roots of these ancient byways were charming, and it was then that the clean-up began.

Properties in the area were soon bought up and rehabbed in a focused effort to woo artists, boutique owners and chefs into what was once brothels and sex shops. The result has been a blossoming of commerce and the new neighbourhood of TriBall is now filled with vintage buildings that have been turned into design stores, gastro pubs and theatres. This is the story of two worlds coming together, a place where newer spots rub shoulders with historic tascas (taverns) and tapas bars that have become popular among hipsters thanks to their retro appeal… a new neighbourhood which has gone from marginal to must-see.

And the truth is that Madrid is like a fine wine – it ages well. Over hundreds of years, its citizens have blended history and tradition with new ideas and refreshing energy. It is a place filled with abundant flavour and character and it is always surprising.

Old and new, past and present… this is the essence of Madrid!

The latest building designed by the famous architect SantiagoCalatrava opens its doors: The new Palacio de Congresos of Oviedo!

A giant cat’s claw building rising up in Oviedo… Designed by Santiago Calatrava, its construction started in 2003 and inaugurated this year 2011.

While the old buildings of Oviedo’s historic centre are photogenic in the morning sunshine, this is the city’s most striking building. In a city full of historical corners, charming little bars and restaurants, from its lofty Gothic and Renaissance churches to its lively medieval market, a stroll through Oviedo provides a glimpse of the colourful past of this attractive city.

Calatrava intended for this latest creation to represent the structure of a human eye. We love it! In the distance it dominates the cityscape, as you get closer... it is awfully impressive!
