This summer, come and enjoy Geneva!

June 2004

Geneva

Situated in the center of Western Europe on the banks of the Lake Geneva, the biggest lake of the Old Continent, below the Jura Mountains and near the Alps, Geneva has a manifold of beautiful and interesting sites, which will charm even the most complicated visitors. Not only due to its beautiful sites but also through its privileged geographic situation on the main axes of Western Europe, its temperate climate, as well as its cosmopolite atmosphere, Geneva is a perfect place for a sojourn at any season.

Undoubtedly Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan city, Geneva’s reputation for religious and political tolerance dates back more than five hundred years. In the 16th century the city spawned the religious teachings of John Calvin, and was where Lenin spent his ‘years of recreation’. Little of their Puritanism is left today - stately homes line the banks of the lake, overlooking an armada of luxury yachts. Jewels and designer labels spill out of exclusive boutiques and into chauffer-driven limousines that slide down palatial avenues.
Geneva is a gateway to Switzerland’s luxury ski resorts, an important banking center and home to thousands of international delegates and diplomats. Among the many international organizations based in the city are the United Nations, the International Red Cross and the World Health Organization.
Mercer Human Resource Consulting’s overall quality of life survey (published March 2004) has revealed that Geneva is the world’s top scoring city, with 106.5 points. This survey takes account of its schools, where standards of education, both in public and private schools, are now rated among the best in the world.

Geneva will be enjoying a rich variety of music over the summer. Over 300 concerts of which 2/3rd are for free, are taking place in venues as diverse as parks, museums, churches and courtyards. A rich palette of classical, jazz and variety concerts known as the \"Musiques en été\" series is organized from late June to early September in the Town-hall Courtyard and at Park La Grange.

Geneva Festival
July 29th – August 8th, 2004

Every year, Geneva welcomes a huge popular festival where all kinds of people and nationalities meet. Its streets are turned into a huge musical stage every year at the Music Festival with hundreds of concerts of all styles, performed by local and international artists. The city fills with the sound of music, from rock bands to classical orchestras.
Created in 1947 and now famous all over the world, the Geneva Festival is made of several entertainment areas located around the lake to satisfy fans of fun fairs, music of all kinds, humorists, night-clubbing, folklore, popular balls, fashion, global gastronomy, etc.

The Lake Parade & Lake Sensation, initiated in 1998, is a huge flow of vehicles and dancers parading along the quays on techno music beats. In the evening, a large open-air rave party goes on at Port-Noir.
The musical fireworks are undoubtedly the grand finale of the Festival, a fantastic show let off by the world\'s most famous firework manufacturers who put the lake on fire!
