2,400 year-old skeleton mosaic discovered in an ancient dining room says:
'Be cheerful, enjoy your life'

A skeleton mosaic was unearthed in Hatay, which was the site of the ancient Greek-Roman city of Antioch Mosaic. It would have decorated a lavish dining room in a luxurious villa. It's thought to be unique, although skeletons are known motifs in mosaics.

It is part of a larger piece which includes two figures, one of whom wears a toga and sandals and is reaching towards what looks like a moon.

The jovial skeleton is seen reclining on what looks like a cushion, holding a drink, as if to toast the health of the people walking over it. Experts believe it would have decorated a luxurious dining room, where wealthy guests may have lounged eating local delicacies in the third century AD. The skeleton in the mosaic is surrounded by bread and an amphora, making it a fitting scene for a luxurious dining area. Archaeologist Demet Kara of Hatay Archaeology Museum said the mosaic is unique in Turkey but a similar one has been found in Italy, according to Turkish news agency Anadolu. However, she said this one is more complete and is therefore a unique piece.

23rd Istanbul Jazz Festival
June 23rd – July 25th, 2016

The Istanbul Jazz Festival, the youngest of İKSV’s festivals, has been held every year since 1994. Taking place in the first half of July, the festival features jazz, pop, rock and world music.

İKSV chose to build this festival around jazz music because it believes jazz is one of the most innovative musical genres – open to new ideas, inclusive and accessible. Accordingly, İKSV organizes a broad-spectrum event that not only brings together music lovers and musicians, but also supports the work of jazz musicians in Turkey and encourages new productions.

The Istanbul Jazz Festival features classical and modern jazz, Latin and Nordic jazz, works combining electronic music and jazz, and other music categories, such as rock, pop, reggae, funk and world music. Thanks to this diversity, the Istanbul Jazz Festival provides audiences new opportunities for discovery. At the same time, with its daring approach to venue selection, the festival reaches beyond traditional concert halls to Istanbul’s historical sites, streets and avenues, trams and ferries, as to reach a wider audience.
