In Search of Lost Skin

May 2006

Steam baths have been popular in Turkey for thousands of years. Like the harem, this Roman and Byzantine tradition was adopted and then perfected by the Selcuk Turks, for whom the steam baths took on an important role. It was not merely a place where believers could fulfill the Islamic precept of cleanliness but also a place to mingle, socialize and gossip. Women would proceed from their harem to the hamam with great ceremony. While young women used this opportunity to show off their ornately embroidered towels and ivory inlaid slippers, older women would spot potential wives for their sons. Men would discuss the latest court scandal or talk business and politics. The oldest functioning hamam in Istanbul is the Cagaloglu baths, built in the 1500?s.

Upon entering the Hamam, you find yourself in a dressing room, or camekan. Your attendant will give you a cotton wrap, or pestemal, and a pair of slippers, or terlik, along with a key to your cubicle. Once you have removed all your clothing and wrapped the cotton cloth around you like a skirt, your attendant will lead you to a warm humid room with a raised stone platform or gobek tasi, in the center where you lay down to work up a sweat for about 10-20 minutes. Your attendant will then scrub you with a coarse mitt cleaner than you have ever been, removing a lifetime worth of dead skin. Once you have been rinsed thoroughly with luke warm water at one of the bathing alcoves, your attendant will begin the ultimate body massage where the phrase ?survival of the fittest? is not an overstatement. Your final treat is the wonderful and ever so relaxing scalp massage. When it all ends the attendant will hand you towels and lead you to the cold room to cool down and enjoy a refreshing drink during which you can?t help but wonder whether this has all been a pleasant dream?
