Ride on Istanbul’s Continental Wings...

February 2009

What a fantastic month and opening for a brand new year!!! If not 12 million in the city, 30 in the ODS office definitely felt Istanbul, this ebullient lady, fluttering.
Together with our 600 guests in total, we felt the excitement of witnessing the lively beat of Istanbul’s exclusive venues where our rich cultural heritage has left a legacy of outstanding historical sites which provide an exciting backdrop for meetings, special events and theme parties.

Suada - Bosporus Energizer

The tiny island of Galatasaray was originally formed of some big rocks. In 1872, Sultan Abdul Aziz granted the island as a gift to his master architect “Serkiz”.  For a period of time Galatasaray Sports Club rented the island and used it for its water sports activities. Finally, a private tourism company took over the management and this small island has become one of the number one leisure and fun centers of the city.
Today, Suada serves as a multifunctional venue with a 360° view of Istanbul covering both the European and Asian coasts of the Bosporus.

Fun night at Suada starts with a maximum 5 minutes long boat transfer from the European side. The course and theme of the night depends on what has been desired. However, events planned on this tiny island are mostly associated with two main requisites; good food and a raving band. Here is an important point. It is not an easy task to bring out the crazy vibes in people and make everybody sing and dance. To accomplish this, you really need to trust the band you hire for the night. Thanks to Sunband, for they have managed to energize the “essence” in all 350 guests from a pharmaceutical company, and heating up the cold January night.

Esma Sultan Mansion – Sparkling Lady of the Bosporus

A multipurpose event space in the Ortaköy district of Istanbul, built inside the ruins of a brick palace, reflecting the Golden Age of Istanbul, was built in 1875 by architect Sarkis Balyan for Esma Sultan, sister of Sultan Abdülaziz and named after its original owner. The mansion was destroyed by fire over twenty five years ago and the exterior brick walls are all that remained of the building. In 1990’s the building is started to be used for summer events as an open space for concerts and receptions. After the building started gaining public attention, it has been decided to use the beautiful land-marked ruin, whole year long as an event and exhibition venue.
From the outside, the building gives the illusion that the palace remains in its original state. From inside, guests are reminded of the building’s former incarnation with views of the Bosporus, Ortakoy Mosque and cafes through the original arched brick window frames.
Creating a covered venue inside the beautiful ruins of a palace constantly reminds us of multiple histories innate in the new design.

This venue definitely stands for “elegance” and any event planned inside the ruins of this brick palace will reflect different colors, faces and tastes peculiar to a specific period on a wide range of historical panorama and in an utmost harmony unique to this land.
At the end of a busy day spent in the depths of the city, a truly original welcome note will resonate through the Janissary’s clapping cymbals. Accompanied by the Ottoman military tunes, our guests pass through the doors of Esma Sultan, into a world where new and old, contemporary and oriental reside in peace.  You only need to turn the lights on, bring your people in, play the tunes, serve the food and let everybody encounter a miraculous atmosphere where time has no chance but to retract from the scene.

1001 Column Cistern – Unveil the beauty of the City’s Oldest Columns

The \"Filoksenus\" cistern was built during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor, Constantine in the year 330 AD as the cistern of the Lavsus Palace and it is the oldest known water cistern of the city. It is thought that it took its name from a Roman senator who was always with the Emperor. It is not known where the 1001 columns – the same in its Turkish name- came from, because there are 16 rows of columns and there are 14 columns in each row, which in total makes 224 columns.

Not necessarily related to the unknown source of its name, 1001 Column Cistern opens into a mysterious underground hall breathing among huge lined up columns. The mystery turns into a pleasant fascination when the special lightning uncovers the real beauty of the eccentric columns. Further on this special Turkish night, some of the performing dancers diffuse into the perception of our fascinated guests in a different way. We all know them as the Whirling Dervishes...sliding through these mysterious columns, dervishes wrap up this underground space on a spiritual journey, presenting the Mystic’s Path in front of hundreds of foreign guests in a foreign country, recalling the message for unity.

What is the real point here?  For special events on special nights, as DMCs and planners, we all spend great efforts to settle the night on a worthy venue which would please our client’s gusto. And once you realize that you can have nothing but millions of special venues in your city and land, this task does not seem that impossible at all. It is all about how you see and feel about these places...and your intense ambition will turn into a vision which is inevitably supported by the fundamental character of that structure. Once you are sensitive enough to touch that essence, the venue will speak up for you.

Further, do not forget to dance and make your clients and guests dance & bring out the joyful child all keep inside. Even you have a raving band like Sunband, or an oriental rhythm on a dancer’s belly, or an inner-deep, celestial sound of “ney” making a dervish whirl, just have fun and everybody around will do the same.
