Enjoy in Rome: colorful Testaccio Market
The new market in Testaccio is located in via Galvani. It is 5,000 square meters, of which 2,000 dedicated to public services and shops, slots for 103 vendors, and an underground of 6,000 square meters. Additionally, an archeological area of 7,000 square meters which can be partially visited in specific times of the year. Many of the stalls are the same as “before”, but some old sellers, who were already thinking about retirement, actually left. There is almost everything at Testaccio market: shoes, socks, clothes… and FOOD that you can buy or just taste, the best street food typical of Rome or other Italian regions, such as Sicilian supplì (fried rice balls) and croquettes, stuffed olives from Ascoli. Some historical stalls look ‘antique’ and often the business has been passed from father to son for generations.
The vendors are quite talkative: they can share with you the best recipes for “‘acqua pazza’ fish”, or recommendations for the most delicious ‘amatriciana’ sauce or ‘carbonara’; others tell you the story of their stall. You can even find a unique stall selling nothing else but sardines from a can. Or a bread vendor with bio products by a well-known brand – from spelt biscuits to Brazilian acai nectar – competing with specialized shops.

People from the city would call this singular group of friends the "12 Apostoli" (12 Apostles), hence the name of the place that they used to frequent on a daily basis. In the early 1900s, the Gioco family began running this charming establishment, which is still one of the oldest and most characteristic in the city today.
